Q: Use iMac as second display for MacBook Pro

I have been successfully using an iMac as a second display for my MacBook Pro for some time, e.g connect and swicth on both devices, then press Command-F2 on the imac keboard to go into Target Display Mode and I have the iMac as my second disply.

However, I have just downloaded and installed El Capitan and Command-F2 not longer works.  Can some help?

Regards,

Graham

    Hey Graham,

I understand that you recently upgraded to El Capitan and now you are getting Target Display to work with your iMac. Let's see if we can get that sorted out.

To get you started, take a look at the article below. It has a section on some general troubleshooting when the commands do not work. I would look at 2 options that I put in bold as the others you might have done. If you have not done some of them, look at those options as well.

Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592

    If Command-F2 doesn't work

If your iMac doesn't switch to Target Display Mode when you press Command-F2, check these things:

    • Make sure the iMac you're trying to use as a display supports Target Display Mode
    • Make sure you're pressing Command-F2 on the keyboard that's connected to the iMac you want to use as a display.
    • In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys" the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
    • Make sure your Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt cable is connected to both computers.
    • If you're currently logged in on the iMac you want to use as a display, try logging out to return to the login window. Then press Command-F2 again.
    • Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple might not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. If this happens, use the Keyboard that came with your iMac to toggle Target Display Mode on and off.
    • If your iMac is currently started up in Windows, it won't enter Target Display Mode. Target Display Mode isn't supported in Boot Camp.

    Take it easy

    Hi norm123,

Thanks for your input.  I had previously checked

    • In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys" the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

and that didn't have an effect.  So I tried your second recommendation

    • If you're currently logged in on the iMac you want to use as a display, try logging out to return to the login window. Then press Command-F2 again.

    and the problem is fixed.

I thought I had already tried the second suggestion, but maybe I was wrong.

You know how when you have a problem and you try all kinds of solutions and when you finally fix the problem you are not sure what it was you did that worked.

Anyway, the problem is fixed and your input was appreciated.

    Regards,

    Graham

    Hi Graham,

I know what you mean after trying so many different steps that all seem to blur together, but glad to know that you got it squared away with logging out.

    Have a good day.

    Dear Norm and Graham,

I am trying to start using my iMac as a secondary display to my MacBook Air and it does not work. It is not exactly the same problem as Graham's, because I didn't use it before upgrading to El Captan.

Anyway, I already tried all the suggestions in the support article sent by Norm, particularly the two itens in bold face. None worked.

The system I want to use as monitor:

iMac 27-in Late 2012, running El Captain 10.11.5

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512MB

    My laptop:

MacBoor Air 13-inch Mid 2013, running El Captain 10.11.4

    Graphics Intel HD 5000 1536MB

Hitting Cmd+F2 or Cmd+fn+F2 or fn+Cmd+F2 on the iMac does not work. There is only an error sound.

Logging out and in again, then trying TDM don't work.

Logging out and trying TDM while on the login screen, also doesn't work.

    Any other ideas?

    Henrique

    Forgot to mention:

With my iMac I use Apple's Bluetooth keyboard without the numeric keypad.
