Q: Copy location from one photo to another in Photos

I am using the Photos application under OSX Yosemite, having updated to it from the older iPhoto application.

I take my pictures with both iPhone (which adds GPS or geolocation data to the images) and my D-SLR (which does not).

I like to copy the location data from the iPhone images to the D-SLR images, to provide accurate location data for all.

In iPhoto, this was easy to do, and easy to find.

How can I do something like this in Photos?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

That is not yet possible in Photos.  You cannot assign locations to photos.

Assign the locations using a different application, for example iPhoto, and only then import the photos to Photos.

The next version of Photos to be released with El Capitan in the fall will allow to assign locations to photos.

See the preview:  Apple — OS X El Capitan

    Everything in its place.

Photos has been fine-tuned to make it even easier to manage your library. Now you can add a location to a single image or to an entire Moment. Naming your favorite people in Faces is faster with a streamlined workflow. You can also sort your albums — and the contents inside them — by date, title, and more.

Anybody found a quick tip for copying the location from one photo to others in El Capitan?

I often collate iPhone and other photos. To copy the location from the iPhone photo and apply it to the others would be super useful.

YOu can  type longitude ape longitude and latitude into the  location field of the info panel for a photo. So all you need to do is to extract the numerical longitude and latitude values from your iPhone photo.  Export the photo from Photos and lokok at it with  Preview. the info panel will show you the GPS.

Tried to do this. A simple copy and paste from preview back into photos. However, photos attempted to recognise the coordinates as a location.

    Latitude: 40° 42' 40.932" N

    Longitude: 74° 0' 46.5" W

    Try it.

PS : It's not in Turkey.

I too want to add location data to multiple photos at once. I'm glad Apple has added the capability to apply a date to multiple photos with El Capitan, but now awaiting the location capabilities. If it's there, let me know what I'm missing! Thanks.

Use a decimal notation, separated by a comma:

I typed the GPS in like this: For example:  40.69004822°N, -74.04506683°W

    and got this result:

I posted an Apple Script here to help to copy the coordinates from a photo to the clipboard:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8541

Thanks for trying. It's fairly close, but a few miles out. You can't take degrees and minutes and decimalise it directly.

Google Maps will convert it for you.  Type your coordinates into the Google Maps search field and you'll see the decimal notation:

    Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 19.13.42GMT.png

When I paste this into the Photos Info panel, I get:

Ok, this is perfect. Thanks so much. I modified the following line.

    set clipboard_message to lati & "° " & longi & "°"

This allows me to copy the GPS information off one picture and paste it into another.

This is all well and good if one has coordinates to start with. All I hoped to do was to add the name of a city, community or neighborhood to older photos, which I can now do individually. I would like to add such information to a group of old photos (picnics, family reunions, etc.). Does anyone have an easy way to do this with Photos in El Capitan?

This is very easy to do. Select the photos that you want to add location data to (use SHIFT and/or CMD to select multiple photos). Then press CMD-I to bring up the information window and type the location in there. Voila.

You can select several photos at once and then open the Info panel for them and paste the name of the location into the field where it says "Add a location". Photos will present alist of places with that name from is database.  The location will be added to all selected photos at once.
