command-R is only for Intel Macs.

command-S will work alone if you restart, and bring you to the command line, where you can attempt to repair the directory.

Hopefully the sale included the original discs, as installation discs for that Mac are expensive and hard to find.

    Hi mrmasonthebest1,

I can help you but I need you to answer a few questions. First, what update did you install (example: update 10.4.11) and what was the source? Was is from Software Update?

Also, did anything happen to the iBook G4 before it wouldn't boot besides you installing the update?

Before you respond to any of these, try holding down command+option+p+r while the computer boots. If that doesn't work, answer the questions and I can help.

    There is no 9.5.

Mac OS X 10.9.5 is not available for G4s.

The maximum operating system any G4 can take is 10.5.8, and that's only if it has at least 867 Mhz on a single CPU (1 Ghz is greater).

The maximum Mac OS 9 any G4 can take is Mac OS 9.2.2.
