Q: POP option for mail account with El Capitan

My earthlink account is a POP email account.  After updating to El Capitan - 10.11 - I lost my email.

When I try to add a new earthlink email account I only get an IMAP account.  Under preferences is says "Account type IMAP" - there is no option to change that top a POP account.

How do I get my email back ???????

    Did you ask Earthlink support?

Yes.  I contacted Earthlink support.  They told me that I need to get the MAIL program from Apple and reinstall it.  The OS 10.11 glitch is that mail can only set up IMAP accounts.  There is no way to add a POP email account.

How do I get a separate  Mac mail program installer ????

Not sure this is an EarthLink issue.

OP we need more information. Have you tried to set up the account as POP?

NOTE: My email keeps telling me I have IMAP accounts, when that is clearly NOT true.

I have the same issue with Gmail. I've always used POP with no issues through Yosemite. Now with El Cap I can no longer set up a POP account using the forwarding options from Gmail as before. Mail starts the setup in accounts then immediately creates the IMAP account where before you had an option to click the continue button and get a switch allowing the POP option. No more !
Can anyone help? I absolutely do NOT want to be using IMAP.

Try creating a new account and when you enter the password, put in a bad password. It will eventually time out and you can manually configure the account. There is an option for the account type.

If you put in garbage in both username and password, it times out faster.

I don't have an account to set up as POP, so I couldn't get any farther than that.

In previous OS versions, if you fill out the first screen to add a new account and hold the Option key down when you hit Continue, you would get the ability to add the type of account you wanted. I don't know if it works the same in OS 10.11, but you could try it.

That's how I always did it before up through Yosemite. For some reason in El Cap you don't get that option. The setup window flies through the opening without stopping creating the IMAP account almost instantly.
Do me a favor if you can. If you hear of an answer or if Google or Apple solves it can you post on this thread. I'll leave it open.

    Thanks

It doesn't. I believe it was suggested that behavior be brought back, but I think it was completely ignored.

I found a solution and posting here to possibly help others.

In El Cap Mail, AFTER selecting the POP options in Gmail, open mail/accounts and hit +. Do NOT select Google !!!! Scan down and select Other Account. This will give you a window where you can make the switch from IMAP to POP and complete the account process.

Thank you all for trying to help me sole this. I really appreciate your time and expertise. I only hope my small offering here aids others and they have aided me.

I wasn't sure if it worked or not. But I do know that now that I've tried it with no success.

Glad you found a solution. That doesn't work when I tried it. It just went straight to IMAP with no other options. Guess you got lucky.

    Glenn,

When you go through OTHER, it should kick out and say the account can't be verified, then you have to change the IMAP setting, and the POP server name. If it logs you in, you may need to put in an invalid password, so you can get to the "advanced" screen.

    Try that (worked for me)

El Capitan killed my Gmail pop setup

log into your gmail account via the web.

then, under your account name, click "my account":

    then click "sign-in and security"

then flip the switch on "Allow less secure apps" so it's in the "ON" position.

    And BOOM!
