Q: Text message notifications on iOS 9 not recognising contacts

Since upgrading to iOS 9, any text message notifications seem to appear with the number rather than a contact name, but if i open the message app they are listed against the correct contact name.

This means that no custom text notifications are working either as the notification doesn't seem to be able to link the number to the contact record. It seems to work for iMessage, but anything sent as a normal text comes through as a number not the stored contact. I've tried the usual - reboot, switching off dial assist etc, but none of that has made a difference. I've also tried making sure the contact record has the same format as the number showing in the notification (e.g. with +44 in front) but that hasn't helped either.  Can anyone help?

Exact same problem as described above on iPhone 6S, got the 9.02 update, was hoping it was a fix but no. It is really frustrating, I have one group message where two contacts names are not displayed, only the numbers, but the third persons name show up.

Hope this can be rectified soon.......

I have the same issue.  In my case it seems that text messages work fine, but iMessages do not display the contact name in the notification.  They are showing with the correct name within the Messages app, but if the same contact sends me a text and an iMessage the notification shows the name for the text, and shows the number for the iMessage.

    It's really frustrating!

For the record I'm having the same issue since the iOS 9 upgrade with text messages not displaying the name of random saved contacts.

iPhone 6 128GB giffgaff, iMessage turned OFF.

It's completely random. My gf's name comes up but most of my friend's names do not. But bizarrely I saved the number of a plumber 2 days ago who was coming round to fix the water meter and when he text me his name came up! So I thought maybe contacts that were already saved don't come up but then my gf's number comes up, totally weird.

Everyone is now saved as +44, upgraded to iOS 9.0.2 but no improvement. Another thing to note is that I have separate custom text ringtones for individual friends, family etc and because the phone is not associating the number with the contact I am not hearing that custom tone when they text but instead the default tone for general texts. Whatsapp is fine though.

I've started to find it amusing now - play a little game where I try to guess who text what from the lock screen. But that's just because I'm slightly weird! Harder than I thought!

Just tried turning off/on MMS Messaging, let's see if that works.

I'm also having the exact same problem with my 6S on EE network. Some contact names show and others do not. I wondered if the ones showing are coming from an Apple product?

I too am having exactly the same problem since the iOS 9 update. Apple support were no help and even tried to charge me for asking them for help! Just certain contacts that come through as a number, not the name or the assigned alert tone. My phone is linked to my Fitbit which makes it doubly annoying.

I also have this same problem on EE, I have tried numerous "Solutions" but nothing works, been on to Apple UK gone through numerous 'Resets' still same problem even tried deleting contact and adding new Contact from unknown sender number still the same problem, very frustrating as it is from the people that text me most, I have Iphone 6+ on 9.0.2 Hoped it would be sorted by now as only started on IOS 9.0.0 update

I have this problem too - just adding to the list in the hope that Apple will take notice!

I have the same problem. I've been following the various threads on it and have tried the following: deleting a contact and then manually adding them back in; deleting all contacts from my MS Exchange e-mail addresses (iOS really doesn't get on with Microsoft); toggling the MMS button in Settings on and off; signing out of iCloud, deleting all contacts from my phone and then signing back in; rebooting the phone (several times). However, none of this has worked. It seems to be the same contacts where there are issues. I've reported it via Apple bugreporter but merely got a reply a few days later directing me to the online chat support. Didn't bother with that! This is clearly an iOS9 bug and it's driving me insane. What is the point of all the clever new features if the phone won't even work as a phone!? This thread alone has had over 2000 views and the bug is not confined to the UK; that gives me some faint hope that Apple will realise and fix the problem. However, I've noticed that iOS9.0.2 hasn't seemed to have fixed the issue of iCloud back ups crashing (mine hasn't auto backed up for months - but that's a whole different set of issues...) and that since installing iOS9 reminders only occasionally appear in the notification screen, although they do appear in the lock screen. I think Apple have got this latest iOS update wrong: it's riddled with bugs and problems. I'm certainly not changing to a 6S (even though I have a 5 that's struggling to cope now): I have a phone that doesn't work properly so why spend twice as much on a new phone that doesn't work properly but slightly faster!? I'm becoming tempted by Android, I have to say. At least it seems to work. Hope this is of some help/interest. Fingers crossed that they sort it out. The slight worry is that the 6S has been such a massive success Apple don't need to worry about a few hundred users with bugs... I guess we'll see.

I am also getting this, very very frustrating. When I turn imessage off or sign out of the cloud, then normal sms messages come through with names in the notifications. So I think it must be either an Imessage or icloud issue with the Notifications Centre..

If you change notifications to alerts, then you will get the contacts name, although the notification centre will still have the the number..

I am also seriously thinking of leaving crApple after our 20 odd year relationship. Just utter junk now days..

So far this is working for me.  I turned off imessage, group messaging, etc.  Turned them all on, then did a facetime with one of the contacts I was having problems with.  Ended the facetime, and everything seems to be working now.  Dont know if it'll fix anyone else, but it's working as of right now.

I do not believe this, I have tried various things that others have posted to no avail, IN fact I have lost notifications altogether I do not even get the number appear or any text tone, That is on the ones I was struggling with before all the others are Ok, It looks like Samsung will gain another customer

I've got this problem too. I've logged a bug report but given the comments above I'm not holding out much hope...

Nope, still a duff phone unfortunately. Going to Samsung, most I know who left crapple and went to Samsung have done nothing but sing there praises. I am now fed up dealing with a company that just wants to wrap a shiny turd up in a lovely box and rip off its loyal customers, you know, those that have put them on their mighty pedestal ..

My MBP Retina is the worst bit of Crapple equipment I have ever owned..

I also have this problem since upgrading to iOS9 and it is very frustrating. Neither 9.0.1 or 9.0.2 have resolved it

I've tried resetting numerous times, turning off dial assist and resetting (which seemed to work for a short time but then the problem returned), turning iMessage off/on, turning MMS Messaging off/on, resetting my network settings and many more suggestions from other threads on the internet, all to no avail
