Q: Top of the range iMac cant handle 12 secs of 4k video off an iPhone 6s plus in FCPX without dropped frames

I own the top of the range iMac and it is spec'd up to the absolute max.

Why then after colour correcting a 12 second piece of 4K footage shot on an iPhone 6s plus will it not play it back in FCPX without stuttering/dropping frames?

Any thoughts?

I'm not running any other apps.

Both on a USB 3 external hard drive.

You shouldn't be having playback problems with that set up. If Quality is set to Better Quality try Better Performance.

Also try running the AJA or BMD speed tests in that USB3 drive to make sure the read/write speeds are what they should be.

Thanks for your help. It turned out ALL of my USB 3 cables had become faulty and defaulted to USB 2 speeds. (Not the ones that came with the external hard drives)
Time to buy some BETTER quality cables methinks.
