Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

There is no error message. The application just shuts down with an option to send a report to Apple.  I've sen 20 messages to Apple already, but I suspect this is getting me nowhere.

I'm using Mail 9.0.  It shuts down with an option to send a report to Apple--cannot even boot up the application.  Replaced my icon for mail on my dock.  Booted from the application.  Worked briefly, but now nothing.  Shuts down immediately upon re-boot. Ed

    DO NOT DOWNLOAD El CAPITAN.

Too many bugs.  In addition to the Mail application which now no longer boots, I have had problems with projection issues with Display in the preferences when displaying to a projection system.

I am also having Mail problems after the upgrade.  Hotmail won't accept the application specific password (password works on iOS devices and when I use a browser to log in) and the iCloud SMTP server has disappeared and won't work when I add it manually.

I upgraded on two machines; a Macbook Pro Retina and an iMac. Both machines were unable to send email afterwards. I was also logged out of iCloud. On the iMac I was able to manually reenter the correct server parameters for the outgoing server and it can now send and receive. On the notebook I have checked the settings and found them to be all screwed up. I corrected them but was still unable to send mail. The connection doctor is able to make connections to all servers so it SHOULD work, yet it doesn't. Thanks Apple.

Let me just say this: I consider myself fortunate. When I read the stories of some of you who lost your emails, are unable to work...

    Good luck to all. GL

Received this message "MCMailErrorDomain error 1032" so tried re-doing all passwords, nothing. Have spent over two hours fiddling with settings... still not right and I am still not happy

I have this problem too. My two POP-Accounts can't connect to send, but they are receiving emails. Fortunately the IMAP account from apple (me.com) is working.

Please guys from apple fix this problem fast! This is a serious bug!

Not only can I not send any mail, the printer wont connect either. I've had to plug in the USB because it's unable to work wirelessly anymore. I cant see any positives from this upgrade, it only seems to have broken everything. Pretty poor testing IMO !

I’ve had real problems with Mail. I can’t send emails, it says that my email address was rejected by the server, any server I use! I have tried in safe mode, reset the PRAM and SMC and also reinstalled El Capitan, nothing works, so I now have to send mail from my iPad, which has no problem, so it’s not my settings, though I did notice that they had been changed and that no server had been selected in the outgoing server section. I have changed the setting, and changed what I can, but to no avail!

I see they have already issued  a second public beta of OSX, 10.11.1, so maybe they are dong something. It would be nice if they told us there was a problem and they were working on it, so we know!

I just found this from my provider: That autodetect setting is probably whats doing it, it's a new feature that is enabled by default and often messes settings up.

it's under "Advanced" in your mail settings. Did the trick for me.

Thanks for the data Pkeady. I removed the "check" on autodetect settings but it made no difference. I've already change a bunch of parameters so it's had for me to reverse engineer this. Had you made changes and then later just removed the check or did you also have to remove any settings you had tried?

    Thanks. GL

I tried that, sadly it hasn’t worked, no matter what server I try to use, it just tells me the server rejects my email address.

I have tried everything I and others can think of. I have just seen a report on BT about it, saying people are getting problems with their accounts being reported as offline!. So I think there is a big men up somewhere. I’m having to send emails from my server web page, which is annoying, as I don’t have the copies on my machine!

Just spent 3 hours rebuilding Mail (two accounts) after installing El Capitan on my iMac (2009) and brand new Macbook.  First install failed on the Macbook.  Had to rebuild from Time Capsule back-up.  Then had to reinstall El-Capitan.  Today, Mail started to quit unexpectedly on my Macbook.  Deleted all Mail accounts and had to rebuild libraries on both computers.  Still Syncing.  Messages still are not loading unless highlighted.  Tried the solution above "uncheck auto detect" and that seemed to work on my Macbook but not my iMac.  Still need to highlight all messages.  I'm going to wait until tonight for all accounts to fully sync on their respective servers and iCloud but this has been a real time waster for me.  One account was an msn.com account, the other a webmail based account.

Second issue is that the split screen function has done something to my Mail screen as I have to keep checking Enter Full Screen to get the Mail screen to appear on my Macbook.  Quirky.

Thanks for listening and all the assistance.

The other settings that needed changing, for me, was the port to 465 - but that may be server-specific. I had tried entering the password in several times. Shut down, restarted, tried again. There were no other settings that I had to change nor did i try to change any prior to uncheck autodetect. Dogbark.com hosts my mail and they seemed to know pretty quickly what could be the problem - that's how I found out.

Hi, Bren_nan, I am pleased to tell you and others that my mail problem is solved. I created a new Earthlink account with the same name as the ruined one. All the mail, hundreds, came in. I disabled the original account. That was on Thursday evening. Friday, all was well until noon. Then I could get no Internet connection — no mail, no websites. I did the usual procedure — unplug and replug router and modem. No luck. Shut down and rebooted and all has been right since. As for Earthlink, that was strange. All the mail on the website came in in reverse order, but the blank pages filled up with the 600 or so messages. Good luck to all who are still having trouble.
