Oct 3, 2015 4:38 AM in response to yaelooby Winston Churchill,Welcome to the Apple Community.
Have you looked in the deleted photos album.
Could you have more than one library.

Oct 3, 2015 4:49 AM in response to yaelooby léonie,You may have imported the older photos into a different Photos Library. Did you have an external drive connected, when you previously worked with Photos?
Try to switch to a different Photos Library.
- Quit Photos if it is running.
- Hold down the options key while double clicking Photosto launch it again. Keep holding down the Options key, until you are seeing the Library Chooser panel.
Are you seeing more libraries there? Try a different library.

Oct 3, 2015 5:03 AM in response to yaelooby léonie,Did you delete photos from your iPhone? If you are using iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone and your Mac, all photos you delete from the iPhone will also be deleted from your Mac and iCloud.

Oct 3, 2015 5:22 AM in response to yaelooby Winston Churchill,Would you happen to know if 5GB sounds about right for the photos you now see in your library or could it be the library you are missing. It's about 3,500 photos taken on the iPhone 5/6.

But did you change any iCloud settings on the iPhone recently? That you are looking for the photos in iCloud suggests did you enabled iCloud Photo Library. What are your settings in the Settings > iCloud ?

Oct 3, 2015 5:57 AM in response to yaelooby Winston Churchill,With a few videos I guess that could use 5GB, so the photos may not simply be hidden. If you don't have another library then I can't think where they could be.
