Q: El Capitan Won't Install - This Disk is used for Time Machine Backup

Downloaded El Capitan today to install on my 2010 Macbook Pro currently running Mavericks. When I select the disk to install, I get the message "This disk is used for Time Machine Backups" even though it isn't, I use an external hard drive. I can't then select the Install button. If I select back and then try to install again, I get the message "OS X cannot be installed on "Untitled"".

I have run a verify and repair on the disk which did fine some issues but is now reporting as healthy and repaired file system permissions, restarted several times, but can't get past this to install El Capitan. I have 170MB of free disk space.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
