Q: Bootcamp no longer boots after creating third partition

Hello;

I wanted to add El Capitan as a third OS to my existing Yosemite and Bootcamp (Win 8.1 Pro) dual partition set up.

I have done the following:

Reduced the size of the Yosemite partition

Deleted the Yosemite recovery partition

Created the third partition

Installed El Capitan

Now, I am no longer able to boot to the Bootcamp partition. Attempts to do so result in the following message.

NO BOOTABLE DEVICE - INSERT BOOT DISC AND PRESS ANY KEY

I'd prefer to fix the bootcamp partition rather than formatting and reinstalling. Might someone be able to assist?

Thank you in advanced

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11), Triple partition boot

I know only Toshiro (Mifune...) .

Your configuration is non-standard. We can try to fix it. Remember that ELC will create it's own Recovery HD.

Please post the output of the following Terminal commands.

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

According to the Boot Camp documentation you can not add a third partition when using Boot Camped Windows.I would reformat and start again by reinstalling OSX and Windows following the Boot Camp instructions.

If you are able to see the Bootcamp volume and files in it, then run the following steps and test. Please ignore the i386 MBR error, but not any others.

    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0

    p

    setpid 4

    07

    flag 4

    p

    w

    y

    Reboot and test.

Your instructions worked. I am now able to successfully boot to the Win 8.1 Pro Boot Camp partition as well as the two Mac OS X partitions.

    I appreciate your assistance.

Please make sure you have good backup of each OS. Since you no longer have Recovery HD, you may want to install OS X ELC on an external disk with Recovery HD, so you can boot from it, if you have issues with the internal disk.

You are on OSX ELC. You will need to disable System Integrity protection temporarily. Boot into Local Recovery (Command+R) and type csrutil disable. After you verify that Windows is working, you can re-enable SIP.
