Q: Having trouble installing OS X El Capitan

I  have tried downloading El Capitan about 3 times now and I keep getting this message when downloading This copy of the Install OS X El Capitan application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading. Those anyone else have this issue/solution,

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Looks like the date on my MacBook is set correctly and I still get the error.

I even tried changing the date back in time and then again forward without any change.

I still can't install El Capitan, still getting the verification error message.

    Finally got it to work.

    was a faulty download

verified with this in the terminal:

    hdiutil verify /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg

it said it did not contain a checksum. so downloaded the file again and got a proper checksum, and finally installed it

Delete "Install OS X El Capitan.app" from Applications folder and you can try the download again.

Having the same problem.  Downloading from App Store.  I've deleted, re-downloaded, and attempted again 3 times -- same error.  I checked the date issue -- it's set correctly on my machine.

I just typed in the following in terminal per above poster: hdiutil verify /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg.

After a while, the bottom line message is:

hdiutil: verify: checksum of "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg" is INVALID

hdiutil: verify failed - invalid checksum

How could no fewer than 3 DOWNLOADS directly FROM THE APP STORE really have this problem??

Same here.  Date checked..Checksum verified...and have downloaded twice from App Store.  I've tried creating Bootable USB via Terminal and Diskmaker X5..no go on all... Anyone able to get past this?

I was hoping there might be another way to obtain the upgrade -- like a good old fashioned disk.  Being told now during a "chat" with Apple Support that the only option is a download from the App Store.

Rep wanted to walk me through setting up another Admin User on my machine and trying to download it from that login.  Don't have time now; might try them again on Monday.  Frustrating.

Do you have any anti-virus software installed ? If you're getting this many failures it is either something acting on the download (such as anti-virus) or there is a problem with your network connection. If you don't have anti-virus, have you tried downloading from another network, i.e.. visit a coffee shop with free wi-fi and see if it works through a different ISP ?

During an erase and install, via a flash drive.

Apparently my problem was that I was trying to do this on a computer I hardly use and it was abysmally out of date.

I went into the terminal that's in the installer, ran a date command to verify the date and then set it.

Restarted the install, and it ran perfectly.

    Hope this helps someone

I use MacKeeper... I don't have "real-time antivirus scan" enabled, though.  Haven't noticed problems downloading anything else... I suppose I have nothing to lose to try this from a coffee shop -- thanks for the suggestion!

I would remove MacKeeper, restart your Mac and then try again, see this topic: Do not install MacKeeper

Just to let you know one solution (after I've posted here multiple times and tried almost everything suggested, to no avail). Took my MacBook to an Apple Store with a Genius Bar appointment. They said others had had this problem. Took a bit over an hour for them to install El Capitan (from their Store) over Yosemite, and all my files and apps were saved! As usual, all employees were terrific. Just wanted to share a last resort.

I am having the same trouble as well, the date thingy looks ok. checksum was invalid, but I have been trying to download, uninstall and redownload from app store again, it is still invalid, so what can I do?
