Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

Same thing happened to me. Just two years of use! Very disappointed with Apple. Two weeks ago my MBA died and as needed a laptop to work I bought an uktrabook to which I easily and cheaply upgrade RAM.

MAKES NO SENSE TO PAY $700 for repairing. Apple devices are disposable. So sad.

Does anyone knows how can costumers proceed to pressure to a Macbook Air RECALL?

I'm another costumer with a Macbook air that came with Logic Board defect.

I have the same issue with my MBA 2013.

I bought it fairly used and have only had it for less than 2 months.

I first got the hint of a problem 2 weeks ago when it refused to turn ON, but pressing the power button for about 10-15 seconds later got it on.Immediately, i decided to reduce the number of 'sleep' modes I leave it on, instead, I shut down more often.

I used it on Tuesday, shut it down and leave it unused for a few days, alas, I return to it and it totally refuses to power ON. All resets (SMC, PRAM) fail to bring it up. I take it to an apple store here and I'm told it may cost as much as NGN 110,000 (USD 550).

As someone said, reliability was one of the key reasons for opting for an Apple device. It is really disheartening to see that a device that is less than 2 years will require a logic board change.

YEt another failed logic board. I purchased a refurbished 11.6 MBA on Sep 16, 2014 and on Sep 28, 2015 - just 12 days out of warranty it has died. It would not wake up and I tried all the recommended procedures without success. I took to a local computer shop that works on Macs and they told me the sad news of the failed logic board. I was told $650 to repair!!! Might as well get a new one!  I called Apple to see if there was anything that could be done, but was told no. I have three other Apple devices and have been happy with the products. How can I find out if there is going to be a recall on this?

Sorry to hear about your problems. I am a technician with over 20 years of experience. I have 2 A1466 MBA early 2014 in for service. Both have the same logic board issue that seems to be plaguing everyone in this discussion. Clearly a recall is required. I've tested every other component(DC-IN board, top plate, battery, ribbon cable, ac adapter etc.).

    Hi,

As a professional IT engineer, and an Apple consumer, the lack of a formal response from a company representative to this thread leads me to believe that either they do not monitor these forums, or that Apple plainly does not care about us. Although the number of incidents being reported may be disregarded as minimal, the fact is that these incidents deserve an investigation by Apple to determine if indeed there was a problem with a specific batch and/or the specific logic boards being referenced here.

An earlier reply suggested several steps we should take to report the incidents. Unfortunately I don't recall if there's a direct way to report them directly to Apple. Any additional recommendations?

    Hi

I got the same trouble in my MBA and Apple support is asking for replacing the logic board to me too (600+ $ estimate)......I don't think they are troubleshooting the real problem...its too obvious that replacing the logic board will solve the problem ultimately.....only battery, casing and fan are the components other than logic board in MBA. Its quite disappointing to have not seen any response from Apple here......I will think thrice before going for Apple product in future.

    Hi

I had a similar problem with my MBA - Fine one day then the next it wouldn't come on at all. After a visit to the Apple Store they said the logic board would need to be replaced at a cost of around £340. After mulling this disappointing news over for a few days I decided to speak to them again to see the alternatives - I also noted (and this may only be applicable to UK customers, I really don't know) that there were some interesting articles online surrounding 'consumer law'  and computers such as Macs that had ran out of warranty and Apple Care (Mine was only1 month out) I queried this in store and they agreed to cover the cost of replacing the logic board.

5 days later I had a functioning Mac again - and 2 weeks later, I dont! Exactly the same thing! Very frustrating and disappointing. I will have to take it back to the the Apple Store - the new logic board came with a 1 year warranty so it SHOULD be replaced without any hassle - but will this happen again in 2 weeks time?!

I must say the staff in the Apple Store have been great - my only issue lies with the product.

Anyway, thought I would share my story as it may help some of you - sorry that it may only be UK customers!

There's no reason for Apple to respond.  Things break.

Put me on the list as another unhappy owner of a (pre-owned) 2013 MacBook Air A1366 with a bad logic board.  Local computer shop wants about $420 to get it fixed...and they send it to Apple.  So not happy.  Might have to go to local retailer to purchase a cheaper PC

Similar problem with my MBA. It is a mid 2009 version purchased new from the apple store. 1 fine day stopped working and Apple icare say they tried reset SMS and PRAM (no go). Need to replace MLB under paid service and check further. They are quoting 35,000 INR for a fix.
