Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

I've been reading about your problems and tried to follow what could help me too, but it's basically impossible.

Mail was the one app that couldn't sync properly after installing El Capitan, and the procedure failed twice before finally succeeding. when it did I saw dozens upon dozens of emails coming through from all my accounts (I have an iCloud and a couple of gmail accounts), many already following rules and going in their separate folders so I thought "no big deal, I'll just have to mark them as read and be done with it".

the problem is the app lasts mere seconds before crashing, I almost simultaneously get a notification to enter the password for one of the gmail accounts: I do so, I get "couldn't verify password or account" every time.

I deactivated the account to see if that's what making Mail collapse so suddenly, no happy ending. I literally have mere seconds, so I cannot uncheck "Automatically detect and maintain account settings", it's simply impossible.

should I wait for them to fix the issue or is there something in those 11 seconds or from outside the app I can try? thank you!

this is the post-crash message I get:

    Hello Everyone,

I seem to have solved my problem.  Although I have used Macs since 1984, I am not a techie.  So, someone should consult an Apple tech person before doing what I tried.  I created a new folder on my desktop "Mail."  I then went to the Library in my system and dragged the entire contents of the Mail folder into the folder on my desktop.  This enables the machine to re-create the files/folders inside the Library Mail folder.  I restarted the computer and booted up Mail and it's working fine.  I needed to re-set the preferred SMTP servers, but the data was still all intact.   All my mail from the past is safe.  It is now downloading and sending new mail.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, since upgrading to OS X 10.11 I was unable to send emails from my Macbook Pro Retina. Fiddling with the settings did no good. This is what solved it for me:

    • Go to System Preferences
    • Sign out of iCloud (you will receive dire warnings about your data being deleted)
    • I allowed all of my data to be deleted from the system. I did not keep any copies (all the data, including emails, should sync back to the system later once you turn iCloud back on.
    • Complete the sign out. Then go to Mail Preferences and delete the iCloud account if it is still there.
    • Create a new iCloud email account
    • You should be back in business (assuming your symptoms are the same as mine were)
    • Disclaimer: Try at your own risk.

Hope this helps out a few of you.

My mail has also crashed. Looks like I've lost several years worth of emails. My 2 hotmail accounts have re-synced to the data held in the Microsoft account, which sadly is many years out of date due to me never opening my mail from their since i got the macbook. One of the accounts is my business account with some important data.

The next big kicker is that i had some great time capsule backups.......... but my time capsule has also died!! Im gutted.

I can receive mails for now.... but sending is not happening, I have tried creating new accounts (doesn't work) and amending existing ones the parameters reset and don't save. Seriously not happy, never had an issue with an upgrade before but this is ridiculous!

It would help if someone from Apple at least could say it is a bug/issue and is being looked at, as trying to work it out myself is driving me nuts!

Where did you find Mail to move it to your desktop folder? I looked in library and can't find it. Thanks.

I can't even get Mail to open! Just starts to open, shuts down immediately and gives me a message to send to Apple.

I don't know if you're experiencing the same issue I had since installing El C. but I think I found a way to solve my problem, perhaps it can help you too.

I couldn't operate within the Mail app as it crashed almost instantly, so I opened Internet Accounts in System Preferences, clicked on all my accounts and unchecked Mail (✓) for all of them.

once I did this I opened the app and it allowed me to look at the situation in Preferences without collapsing. I noticed that lots of emails had been downloaded again (sent to each folder following the rules I established) and some seemed to be missing.

from Preferences in Mail I looked at the Advanced tab and the "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" option could be unchecked only for iCloud, all my Gmail accounts had to stay that way, so I tried to activate the accounts one at a time from within Mail and looked at what happened: all the emails I had been receiving on my iPhone arrived following rules, etc. and I can't be 100% sure about how many but most of the stuff that seemed to be missing reappeared (might even be all, I'll find out if something really important doesn't show up when I need it).

How did you do that? I tried to revert back to Yosemite to no avail!

Hey there, I am experiencing the same problem. My whole mail server including the service page on the internet is blocked by EL C. Other e-mail addresses like (German) GMX or freenet work, as well as all other internet pages. I recovered back to Yosemite, connected another router I still had somewhere, and it worked for a short while. I made the mistake to re-install El C. Then it all got blocked again. Even the devices which use the same WLAN are blocked. If I try to get the mails via hotspot connection with my iPhone, it works. So it must be an issue between the router (no matter if new or old one, they are basically identical) and EL C.

I am pretty clueless and cannot wait for clever suggestions.

    Best regards

I went into the Accounts setting for email (Command,) and was FINALLY able to select "iCloud" for the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) from the dropdown listbox. It took several tries before I saw this in the list of selections, but "None" being selected for this setting will not allow outgoing email. After selecting a viable value for the outgoing mail server everything works fine.

I am having some serious performance related issues with El Capitan that I just can't seem to put my finger on. Unfortunately it appears we are facing several upgrades to get this puppy working like the previous releases (Mavericks/Yosemite).

I believe I will be waiting for an update to Mail. It is not the first time and I dont blame Apple at all. There is no way that any software engineer can anticipate the limitless configurations that are out in the world. With that said, I find it interesting that the issues I am having have alwasy been on my 15" MBP, not on my 27" iMac or my iPhone. They all have some issues with mail at one point or another and the gmail keychain is an on going source of frsutration, but the 15" MBP just weill not accept the new server info on El Capitan?

I have tried everything on this thread, thought that unclicking the "auto detection" was for sure going to help, but it did not (though I am suspicious of that area of the config as I noticed like someone before in this thread that as I changed the port #'s, they would change back to "0" automatically, something was/is going ton there)

Mail is working fine on my Desktop, mail is working fine on my iPione 6s, I guess two out of three ain't bad?

For those of you with outgoing mail problems, there is also also an "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" in the SMTP settings preferences. You can find it by Mail->Preferences, select an account, and then in "Outgoing Mail Server" options menu, select "Edit SMTP Server List...".

In my case after two days of problems, my mail problems seem to have gone away. I can't point to any single action which corrected the situation.  My problems were incoming messages not being able to display the message body, outgoing messages sitting in the Outbox, and as many as 20 duplicate notifications in the notification center. These have all gone away. Unchecking "Automatically detect..." in SMTP was the last thing I tried. But it doesn't seem that should have effected anything but outgoing messages.

I was on the verge of rolling back to Yosemite. However, if today's behaviour holds up, I will stick with El Capitan. Thus far today, "knock on wood", Mail now seems to be working for me.
