Q: El Capitan stuck on load

Hi,

 

After upgrading to El Capitan, it fails to load and gets stuck every time.

On the developers forums there were plenty of people with same issue and good samaritan Max108 made the following steps

 

  1. Boot into Recovery Mode (cmd+R)
  2. From the central menu open Disk Utility.
  3. Then select the "Macintosh HD" partition, then the "Unlock" from the "File" menu  (If you don't see "unlock" then go on to step 4 - If you don't see "Macintosh HD", stop and post back)
  4. Select all of the writing in bold below and press cmd+C to copy it to the clipboard:
    • cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD" ; ls -1 Library/Extensions/ ; find Library/Application\ Support -iname *.kext ; find Library/Filesystems -iname *.kext ; find System/Library/Extensions -ctime +2d -depth 2
  5. Then go to the Utilities menu, open Terminal and press cmd+V to paste the long command into it.
  6. Select all the output from that and press cmd+C to copy it to the clipboard.

 

  The list from the output gives the idea which kext are not letting your mac boot and Max108 was helping people to resolve this problem.

I've managed to fix it myself, using developers and community topics and great guy Max108 help.

 

I'm a noSuperPro user, but solution here is to remove .kext kernel extension files which prevent El Captain loading due to unknown for me reasons.

 

So while in RecoveryMode, start terminal and cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions" and remove all unnecessary broken kext files using rm -rf or create a temp folder and move them there. I simply deleted them

In my particular case these 3 were the reason:

 

System/Library/Extensions/ssuddrv.kext/Contents

System/Library/Extensions/USBExpressCardCantWake_Huawei.kext/Contents

System/Library/Extensions/EltimaAsync.kext/Contents

 

AFTER DELETE - El Captain loaded successfully!

    How did you know that you need to remove these particular ones?

    (I've a loooong list of 3-rd party libraries, that's why)

    hi,

     

    Coz from my list other 2 are Apple drivers and these 3 were 3rd party.

    I've checked what application each one of them represented and all three were either removed long time ago or not used anymore, so I removed them safely.

     

    In your particular case, maybe moving them to temp location and then checking one by one which one is causing problem is the best solution

    VirtualBox is definitely the one of the many, however I'm not good enough to help you properly.

    Hi guys, I am still struggling with this. I got some help pointing out what kext-files could be causing the problems, thank you GSfromNL. But I can't mange to delete them, I have tried several options but always get "No such file or directory". The name of my HD is Macintosh HD so it must be something else that I am missing?

    It is a nice workaround.

    However....    a real solution should come from Apple.

    Apple was reported on this problem weeks before the official release of El Capitan.

    Obviously we as customers are not important for Apple anymore....   "stupid users".... "let them struggle with the install"..... 'installing software from outside the App Store".....

    I reverted back to Yosemite due to this problem. However, I've had a go at your solution and was thinking of deleting the said .kext file and having another go at installing El Capitain. So I ran the script above (still in Yosemite) and I've spotted 'EltimaAsync.kext/Contents' in there - but when I try to delete it from my terminal it delivers the following (see below). I used Disk Permission to try to unlock it, but there's no 'unlock' option in the file menu when I select Macintosh HD.

     

    Can anyone help? Why is permission denied for me to delete it? Is there another way?

    TThanks! Have been fighting With it for a week, reinstalled El Capitan 3 times. Never really used shell before, would be useful if someone could point to a basic guide.

    This has been drivining me mad but found what seems like a too good to be true fix.

    from Finder

    Navigated to Macintosh HD >System > Library > Extensions

    in view options show date modified and date last opened

    then just deleted files from 2013 back.

     

    Worked for me with no prob so far.

     

    take care and always back up before you kill it.

    Good, thanks will keep an eye on it. But for people stuck with a computer which doesn't start they might find the suggested solution frustrating
