Sep 26, 2015 12:28 PM in response to jh214by Linc Davis,Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Sep 29, 2015 9:40 AM in response to Linc Davisby jh214,Thanks for your help Here are the log lines that appear after I resize in Preview. For some reason, hopefully apparent in the log, Preview will not save the resizing. For example, I am trying to resize an image from 12.6 x 9.5 (314dpi) to 7 x 5.25 (250dpi). I am able to make the changes, but then when I reopen the file, the dpi is back to its original, and the size is not what I saved.

Sep 30, 2015 7:33 PM in response to jh214by Linc Davis,Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:
Containers/com.apple.Preview
Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper
Group Containers/com.apple.Preview
Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState
Log out and log back in. Launch the application and test.

Oct 4, 2015 7:53 AM in response to Linc Davisby jh214,Dear Mr. Davis,
I very much appreciate your patient help with this problem. I followed your instructions above and deleted those files that existed in my Library (the first four were there and I deleted them, the last two were not there). I then logged out, logged back in, and tested. Unfortunately, the problem persists.
So, to recap, I am trying to resize jpeg files in Preview. I've done this hundreds of times with no problem, but then I got a new Mac and Preview doesn't seem to work on resizing any of my files. According to the metadata, none of these files are locked, so there should be no problem resizing them.
Here is a snapshot of what is going on using one file as an example:
1. Start with an existing image as jpeg file having these characteristics in Preview
--width 5.57"
--height 4.18"
--resolution 314 dpi
--100% size at 559K
--scale proportionately checked
--resample image checked
2. Effect changes in Preview to resize the image
--width 7"
--height 5.25"
--resolution 150dpi
--60% size at 221K
--scale proportionately checked
--resample image checked
3. Save changes and close file
4. Reopen file, which now has the following characteristics
--width 3.34"
--height 2.51"
--resolution 314dpi
--100% size at 230K
--scale proportionately checked
--resample image checked
For some reason, Preview is not retaining the sizing and resolution that I need for the particular publishing venue. This is the case with all files, regardless of size and resolution. I have never encountered this before, and it is effecting my productivity. I really do appreciate any help you can provide!
Best,
Joseph

Oct 5, 2015 10:35 AM in response to jh214by Linc Davis,For information about document versioning, see this support article. The database that stores past versions of your documents seems to be corrupt.
Back up all data before making any changes.
All past document versions will be cleared. Current versions won't be affected.
Quit all open applications except the web browser.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/.DocumentRevisions-V100
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with an item named ".DocumentRevisions-V100" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Oct 6, 2015 9:12 AM in response to Linc Davisby jh214,In attempting to carry out the above instructions, here is what happened:
Using the first approach, triple-click > control-click > services > reveal in finder:
--the only window that pops up is Macintosh HD; it does not locate the specific file
Using the second approach, copy > go > go to folder > paste:
--I get a message that says "The folder “.DocumentRevisions-V100” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."

Oct 6, 2015 10:00 AM in response to jh214by Linc Davis,Using the first approach
Select either column or list view mode from the View menu.

Oct 8, 2015 6:55 AM in response to Linc Davisby jh214,The same thing happens in either grid, list, or column view--it only shows the top directory of Macintosh HD (folders Application, Libraries, System, Users). No further sub-directories or folders appear in the columns.
I also did a 'search' for the file /.DocumentRevisions-V100 and nothing came up.
Sorry to keep at this, but I am rather desperate for Preview to work properly on this brand new Mac! : )
