Q: El Capitan won't install

Running 10.10.5 on a late 2013 Macbook Pro.

Downloaded the El Capitan installer but when I select the hard drive, a note says "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer". Odd, considering its the drive its running on now.

Anyone else seeing this?

Open System Preferences > Startup Disk then make sure MacintoshHD OS X 10.10.5 is selected then click Restart then try downloading El Capitan.

    * Make sure to backup your important data prior to upgrading to El Captain

That's a good tip. Didn't help in this case.

Turns out there was a disk error. I had to reboot into recovery mode and run Disk Utility. Its all better now.

    Same issues as you @Geuis

Tried Samit's advice and didn't took me far, how did you enter recovery mode, and after that what did you do? I would like more details about the procedure.

    Thank you!

Please note that I do not want to fresh install - I want to update. I'm not looking now to backup, only update.

Restart your Mac. Hold down command-R while its restarting. This should start the mac into recovery mode. From here you can access the disk utility and have it repair the disk. Then restart and if everything is ok, you should be able to do the upgrade.

I Have tried it already and it doesn't fix my issue. Can you provide a more detailed procedure maybe i skipped something? I am thinking that this may occur due to dual booting into windows set up with boot camp (i have some work apps that require windows). Any idea?

To be very specific, after i run Verify and Repair i get the following information box: "This disk doesn't contain an EFI system partition. If you want to start up your computer with this disk or include it in a RAID set, back up your data and partition this disk".

I just want to update ...

Sorry, I can't help. I told you what I did to fix my problem. If that didn't work, you'll need to talk to someone else. It might be worth going by your local Apple Store.

    I have this issue, too.

I'm 1 for 2. An early 09 MacBook took the update, no problem.  My 2015 iMac ... sigh. because I'm a hillbilly and do not have unrestricted internet, I had to tote the iMac to town and bogart a secure wifi at a friend's house.  Took about 3 hours to download the 6 gb file.

The installer gets to the "select drive" (I do have an external HD), advises it's "FileVault conversion in progress. Use Security & Privacy Preferences to check status"

So ... I try to check the status. Nothing conclusive.

    sigh.

thought I'd reattack this thing since Apple sent an OS update today.

I still cannot upgrade my 2015 iMac. the progress bar in the system preferences/security&privacy says "a recovery key has been set" and "encryption paused"

It's been like this since my first effort I "paused" 3 months ago.

I have done a full backup on an external HD ... but I'd rather not haul this thing 1+45 to the Genius Bar. in Ft. Worth.

    Any hints?  Thanks!
