Q: Yosemite 10.10.5 BTMM Issues

Back to my mac was working fine (screen sharing) between my MacBook Air (10.10.5) and my Mac Mini (10.10.5) over the internet using BTMM.  MacBook Air is sitting behind Airport Extreme and Xfinity/Comcast gateway (TG862G).  Mac Min is sitting behind Xfinity/Comcast gateway (TG862G).  Worked like an Apple product should (for 1 week), then suddenly stopped working with no changes/updates to either system.  I'm signed into BTMM on both machines (I've turned this on/off a few times), Screen Sharing and File Sharing are set correctly (a few times), no issues with NAT-PMP/UPnP, no computers are sleeping, etc.  I've rebooted each machine a few hundred times and ran out of ideas.  Both machines show up in Finder but when selected (Share Screen...) I get the "Connecting to ...." message followed by the less than helpful "Connection failed to “Mac mini”, "Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly."  I don't see anything helpful in the console logs, traceroutes look fine, no issues with any other icloud functionality, etc.  Lastly, I'm able to connect from the Mac Mini to the Passport connected to the AirPort Extreme (in the MacBook Air home).  In much less words, file sharing to the Airport/Passport is working, screen sharing is not.  Any advice w/b helpful.  Thank you.

Thanks for sending.  I've double checked each item in the article.  As stated, this was working flawlessly for 1 week and then stopped (with no changes/updates/etc.)

Not very helpful messages from console log.

Workaround for broken Yosemite BTMM.  Hopefully the El Capitan release will address the BTMM issues.  In the mean time, the only workaround that I was able to find was Apple ID Screen Sharing.  Open Screen Sharing, then open a connection using the Apple ID of the remote user.  This allows me to troubleshoot the remote computer.  It does not allow full BTMM functionality.  In other words, you need someone to be at the remote computer to grant screen sharing access (and full control of remote computer).  I've tested this from public wifi and guest wifi, no issues.  Note, you cannot use your own Apple ID on the remote mac, that is already being used by you.  Lastly, this is not the same as using Screen Sharing thru Messages, when attempting to do that I only get the greyed out disabled sharing icon.  Not going to even attempt to troubleshoot that, splitting the atom would be easier.  Lastly, be sure Screen Sharing is enabled on both macs and stay away from double NAT

Closing the thread.  El Capitan did not fix the BTMM issue.  Screen Sharing by Apple ID works flawlessly.  What a shame, I expected a lot more out of Apple.

I am having this exact issue, but only since the upgrade to El Capitan. Everything worked fine on Yosemite.

Got BTMM enabled on my MacBook Pro and my headless Mac mini at home.

With my MacBook at home on the LAN, I can screen share to my Mac mini with no trouble.

As soon as I'm on any other network (Mobile, Work wifi etc.) and I'm using BTMM, I can open the Mac mini in Finder and browse my shared files, but screen sharing refuses to work. It just sits connecting for a minute and then says "Authentication failed for Mac mini".

If I look in the Console, I can see that every time Screen sharing attempts to connect, I get this in the log..

    kernel[0]: ip6_output (ipsec): error code 22

Update to 10.11.1 has not fixed it either. Highly frustrating!!!!! Googling this error yields no results other than this thread!

Having same problem. Getting an "Authentication Failed" error each time I try to connect to my remote mac via BTMM. Running El Capitan on both machines.

Have tried restarting, signing in-and-out of iCloud, etc. No luck. Would love some help with this!
