but when I try to import my iphoto library it says it already exists

How are you trying to migrate the iPhoto Library again?

You do not import an iPhoto Library to Photos, you drag the iPhoto Library onto to the Photos icon in the Dock to open it in Photos, or you launch Photos while holding down the options key until you are seeing the Library Chooser panel. Then select the iPhoto Library to open.

If you receive a warning, that the library has already been migrated, change the filename extension of the library from".migratedphotolibrary" to ".photolibrary".

You can do that in the Info panel for the iPhoto Library.

Select the iphoto library in the Finder and press the key combination ⌘I for "File > Get Info". In the Info panel click "name&Extension" and disable "die Extension".  Then change the filename extension back.

Now Photos should open the iPhoto Library again without complaints.

I have a quick question you maybe able to answer.

A friend says that you can only see photos taken on your iPhone/ipad on all your devices

not photo,s taken on your normal camera, you can only see those on icload.

    is this correct?

One more question if you dont mind.

Once I have my iPhoto album in there is it worth splitting them all down into individual albums or leave them

as 1 iPhoto album then put all my new photos into new albums?

    Kindest,

Albums  and folders are you use to use in organizing - use them as you wish - you do not need to use any and you can use as many as you want

Not at all - your friend does not know how to use Photos - what you see and where depends on the setting on each device

For example if all devices use iCloud Photo Library then devices have identical libraries and every addition, deletion or edit made on any device is reflected on a devices
