I understand you got an error attempting to upgrade to El Capitan and now can't seem to reinstall Yosemite either. It sounds like you are doing some good troubleshooting for your install. Thanks for checking with Disk Utility.
That initial error is discussed in this article:
Note you will want to backup if you don't have one already.
Regards.

I just saw your reply and I'm not sure what dominic23 suggested. Can you unlock the disk to continue?
OS X Yosemite: Set permissions for items on your Mac
Apply permissions to all items in a folder or a disk
Take care.

Oct 10, 2015 6:55 AM in response to Nubz N.by LynM57,Have a late 2011 model MBP 15". I downloaded El Capitan yesterday and tried to install it. It gets down to 5 minutes left then the screen go grey then I get error codes. Unable to do a safe startup. I do the procedure for it but it goes back to installing mode. Get error code again with 5 minutes left. Using my wife's MBP to trouble shoot.
