Q: Photos on Mac is not detecting and importing photos on iPhone

I have a mac running El Capitan and an iPhone 6S with 9.0.2. I have photos on the iPhone that I have taken this past week. When I plug in the iPhone to the mac and launch iTunes and photos I can see the iPhone icon in photos but the import photos but the "imported selected" and "Import all" tabs are grey not blue.

this was not  a problem yesterday with Yosemite.

    Hello, jdooley,

I have the exact same problem...

I haven't been able to backup my iPhone photos for almost two weeks, now!

It worked once when I rebooted my mac, but then it stopped, no matter how many times I reboot...

I hope they have this fixed in a new OSX update, fast...

Same problem here with 9.1 and 10.11.1, sometimes the iPhone does not show up in the Photos app, and when it does it cannot transfer the new images. It usually works after a reboot, but not always, really annoying !

Do you have the iCloud Photo Library enabled in your Photos library?  If so that disables the syncing in iTunes.

iCloud photo library is not enabled.

I thought the iPhone did not appear in Photos when more than one user was logged in. But today after a reboot, Photo works every time, even with three users logged in.

I have the exact same problem: iOS 9.1 and El Capitan. My Camera Roll is full with 4k videos and Live Photos yet when I try to import them via Photos on my Mac, the device shows up, but there are no photos to import and the Import button is greyed out. Someone in another thread suggested opening Image Capture first as that might help, but this didn't do anything for me. Also, I do not have the iCloud Photo Library enabled. I know that I can get my Photos onto my Mac this way, but I would like to be able to import them directly via USB cable, just as I used to before I upgraded to El Capitan.

the solution that works for me is I plug in my iPhone to my iMac and then do a soft reset(restart) on the iPhone hold the home button and top right lock button uuntil you se the apple logo. After this the photos show up in iPhoto with the import/(delete after import) buttons highlighted in blue.

Same here. I rely on Image Capture because I can control exactly where my various images go. This makes me very unhappy. I hope it's not Apple trying to force us onto the Cloud. I shoot way too much for that to be feasible.

    What gives, Apple?

Apple doesn't force us to use iCloud.  It's strictly optional.

this did nothing for me....however, after i restarted my computer and i open photos..it was back.  I did make sure to check the box for "Open photos for this device" and all seems to be working well again for me. (knock on wood)
