Q: El Capitan doesn't recognize my printer, can't re-add

I downloaded El Capitan and suddenly my Macbook Air doesn't see my printer anymore.  I did a reset as suggested but when I try to add my Brother printer HL-2280DW it doesn't show up.  I tried using the Airport Utility and it, too, sees nothing and won't allow me to add a WPS printer.  Can someone help?  I am using a TWC cable modem and router.

Brother HL-5250DN here. Same deal, but on a Mac Mini. I re-installed OSX 10.11 and printer is still not connected.

    Help, you experts!

Did you try restarting the router also? That's necessary sometimes.

    Hope this helps.

I didn't get around to restarting my modem but for whatever reason, after spending time doing other things, I went back to my Printers & Scanners and when I clicked on + to add a printer, my Brother printer was there.  I don't know why it wasn't before but it added it immediately and now printing/scanning with no problem.

I checked with my ISP. They had me ping the printer using Terminal to make sure my ethernet connection and cable from the router to printer were working.

They were, so it's definitely a driver issue.

I go to the Brother support website and it says my printer is not supported for El Capitan.

    Are they kidding?

I would check with Brothers for a software/driver update

I did, my printer is not supported, so Apple and Brother just screwed me over into buying a new printer unless I'm missing something here.

You may have already found this but I referred to this link and it seemed to say an update for my printer model wouldn't be available until late October.  So I prepared myself for a wait.  As I said earlier, don't know why later on my printer suddenly showed up on my Mac and is now printing with no problem.

I'm having the same issues with two different Brother printers.  Is anyone else getting the printer to connect only to loose connection?  And then maybe reconnect again.  And so on....

This seems really odd that Brother and Apple were not prepared for this...

I have had similar problems with an HP Laserjet. I managed to get rid of this problem by adding/entering the printer via its IP address directly.

I guess that there is a problem due to bonjour services.

I also checked with my printer manufacturer (HP) -- they said that they do not have an updated El Capitan driver for my printer.

It might still work, but with limited features.  Yosemite was the last supported driver available.

They also recommended checking with Apple to see if they provided an updated driver.

For now, I'm using Yosemite until this, and other problems (Mail and others) are resolved -- hopefully in an updated release.

I gave up on my Brother printer as soon as I saw it was unsupported and abandoned under OSX 10.11

I was initially very disappointed in Brother, but then I realized the printer was 7+ years old and it owed me nothing.

In fact, I sold it on Kijiji quickly to a Unix guy.

I ordered a new Brother, way cheaper than the old model, with more capability and features, so I'm OK now.

Brother scanners aren't working over the network, and your old print queue will have to be deleted, however, you can re-add your printer via its IP address using IPP (Internet Printing Protocol.)

El Capitan wipes out the ability to print or add printers.

How can an Operating System be released to the public without at least a few basic printer drivers, PCL , PostScript, XPS, CUPS, etc.
