Q: El Capitan/Mission Control issue(s)

Upon upgrading to El Capitan I notice that invoking mission control (via F3, cf. below) just gets me a brownish area on top of the screen showing my desktops, but NOT their content. In order to see this, in addition I must hover the pointer over that area. No big deal, but still annoying, especially since this worked fine before. I am aware of the fact that more people have noticed this and are complaning about it - the more complaints, the greater our chances for correction, I guess.

And as I am commenting on this, I did NOT get mission control to work anywhere near what is mentioned in the numerous gloryfying posts about the "new" version: No split screen, no program window bundles, nothing, at least in my hands. Here's my setup, which might prevent proper behaviour:

MBA mid 2013 + Cinema display + Apple BT keyboard + Logitech USB-stick mouse (MX revolution).

I practically NEVER use the touch pad, since I've got to do serious work on that machine. I do not have magic corners, but I have 4 desktops and assigned programs like MS word, thunderbird, vlc, photoshop, or firefox to these spaces. I can switch between desktops/spaces via cmd-1, cmd-2 etc. which in most of the cases works ok for me. But sometimes a split screen probably would be nice.

Here is a few ways to get into split screen. Note, not all apps work in split screen.

    1. Have the 2 apps you want in standard view to use in split screen on the same desktop space. Click-hold the the full screen button of one of them and the app will go into full-screen and move to one half of the screen. The second app, and any others that are on the original desktop space that can go into split screen mode will be presented to you in the other half of your screen. Select the one you want.

    2. Put both of the two apps that you want on in split screen into full screen mode. Go to mission control and drag one full screen desktop of the other one and they will make one split screen space.

    3. Have the 2 apps you want in standard view to use in split screen in any desktop space. Go to one of them and drag it up to the top of your display, past the menu bar and it will open mission control and drop the app window into an empty area on the desktops row at the top of mission control. The app makes its own full screen desktop space. Now go to the other app and do the same, dragging it up to the top of your screen into mission control and drop it on top of the first full screen app. They are then placed in spilt screen.

Hi & thanks for those hints, I appreciate. They do not work, however (I tried this before couple of times according to several youtube videos etc.).

-- I open iTunes in one space.

    - I open pages in the same space.

    - I long click on the green button in the upper left corner of, say, iTunes.

    - iTunes goes full screen in a separate space, there is no way to get a split screen at this point.

    - the same holds for pages.

Both programs show up full screen in two new, separate spaces which can't get grouped together.

Curious! But no problem, since it is not that important for me using genuine Apple programs but rarely.

    Best,

It seems that Spilt View is also determined by the application's minimum window width when in standard desktop view.

I have a 15" retina MBP and tested iTunes and Pages.

On the computer's internal display with the default resolution, the minimum width of the iTunes and Pages app windows are greater than half the width of the display. So there is not enough room on the internal display to put both apps side by side. If I change the resolution to more space, then I can display the two apps in Split View. When I have my external 24" display connected, I can also set these two apps up in Split View as the display is big enough to fit them side by side.

Two Pages app windows can also be placed in Split View with higher resolution on the internal display and on the external display.

I also tried this, to no avail. Both programs end up in new spaces on my external cinema display. So in my case, there is no difference between inbuild screen and external screen. Hardware has been mentioned before, just to make sure: MBA 13'' Mid 2013 at default resolution, cinema display 24'' @1920 x 1200. Perhaps it even is the 27', I am not quite sure how to measure. Visible area is 520 x 325 mm.

Basically, I am not that much missing this feature, which apparently is not quite easy to use. The other nuisance mentioned in the original post would be nice to be taken care of, though.

Not sure why you cannot get the same as Split View as I can as my external display has the same 1920x1200 resolution.

Apple > About This Mac - Displays will show you exactly what you have installed.

On your other issues from your first post.

Yes, this is just how Mission Control has been implemented in OSX 10.11. I guess the software engineers had small displays in mind, giving as much display to the apps on the desktop rather than to the old quick display of the other desktops. I'm not a fan either. I have seen that some users have created a Mission Control hot corner at either the top right or left of their display, so as when Mission Control is invoked, the cursor is already at the top of the display and all the desktops are displayed straight away.

    no program window bundles

Do you mean that apps are kept together when in Mission Control? This is invoked by the System Preferences > Mission Control - Group windows by application

I've had problems with Mission Control on El Capitan too. I've been able to get it to work, I have 4 desktops and can switch and move between them, it behaves similar to previous versions of OS X.  My problems are on waking my MacBookPro from a sleep (opening laptop cover).

I just updated to El Capitan last week and last night I had the following experience. No windows  were shown for my apps, when I hit F3 (Mission Control), some app groups  would show up with only an icon and some had a blue box around the windows, see image below.  When I clicked on an app window to select it , the window would disappear.     Also, the desktop #'s should have been Desktop 1 thru Desktop 4 and they showed up as Desktop 6 thru Desktop 9.  I as able to "fix" this by "killall Dock"
