Q: Back of Watch fell off

This morning when I took my Apple Watch (sports version) off the charger, the back stayed on the charger while the rest of the watch came off, connected to the back through a small ribbon cable. The back just fell off.

I use the watch pretty normally - wear it during the day, charge at night, wear it running for an hour 3 times a week. Don't wear it in the shower or anything like that.

I can place the back on the watch but it eventually just falls off again, and I'm sure the moisture seal is shot.

Looks like the back is just glued on and prone to falling off. Even my relatively ugly Pebble Watch used screws and a rubber gasket. Apple just squirted a bit of glue around the edge, pushed the back on, and called it a day.

Mine just did the same thing tonight. Taking it in tomorrow. Seems like poor workmanship.

I sent my watch in for repair for just this problem. Got an email today saying I abused my watch and would be charged for the repair. My watch has not been abused ever! Never in water, always taken good care of it. Just took it off charger and it came apart. It really burns me that they are charging to fix it! It's plain and simple a defect. I'll call them in the morning and hopefully get some satisfaction.

Just wanted to add this just happened to my watch today as well. Pretty displeased with the fact that it sounds like I'm going to have to send my watch off to get it fixed/replaced.

I had the same problem in July.  Took watch to Apple Store and they replaced it.  (without charging my applecare.) Sadly, it just happened again.

I did not drop the watch or bang it or knock it against anything.  Back to Genius Bar tomorrow.  Frustrating.

Just happened to me while on honeymoon in Orlando (I'm from the UK). Apple Store suggested that I dropped it and tried to blame me. They eventually put me in touch with a genius who was actually very nice and identified that the watch was in very good condition other than the back having fallen off. They have just sent it off but are quoting up to £400 to fix, depending on whether it's covered by the warranty. I'll wait to see what happens. Darn thing just fell apart on its own, nothing I did. Poor build quality from what I can see. Looks like a design flaw.

The back of my stainless steel 42mm fell off tonight when I was putting it on the charger.  I accidentally put the charger on upside-down for night stand mode and when I tried to reposition it the back just fell off.  Made a Genius Bar appointment.  I have never dropped it or abused it in any way, except for wearing it every day through the summer in Miami.  It's obviously a design flaw if human sweat can make it fall apart.  I won't take it lightly if they try to stick me with a repair fee.  I've almost always been very satisfied with how they take care of me in person at the local store (Miami Beach) so I'm optimistic.

I was just starting to really like the thing after the Watch OS 2 update and I'm going to miss it for however long it takes to get it fixed.  But still!  A "sport" device that's intended to be worn against your skin that falls apart if it gets sweat on it?  I expect more from Apple.

The question is what happens when the warranty runs out, Apple are replacing the watches for now, but for how long?

The. It will no longer be covered. When the warranty runs out, Apple will most likely offer an out-of warranty replacement at a reduced cost, just as they do with iPhones.

This happened to my wife's Apple watch about eight weeks ago (stainless).  Apple sent a replacement.  This morning, the same thing happened to the replacement.  No abuse.  She is very careful with her watch.  She simply attached her watch to the charger last night, as usual, and this morning the back had separated with the magnetic charging disc still attached.  Based on other posts around the web, this is clearly a product defect that Apple doesn't wish to have on the the radar.  We plan to take it in to an Apple store this week.

It's disturbing to read the multiple reports from people who have had it happen more than once, even with replacement watches.  This is going to be a pretty embarrassing problem for Apple when the backs start falling off of people's watches a few months after the warranties expire.  I envision a super-glue fix in my future, once my warranty is done.

It definitely affects my thinking about whether to keep using the watch and whether to upgrade to the Apple Watch 2 or 3 or whatever.  I no longer feel that I can trust it to be water resistant enough to use it outside during sports like cycling.  But that's one of the main use cases for me, so if I can't use it for that then why bother with it at all?  I didn't buy the thing to pay for coffee with my wrist.

I agree, too many people saying they are on their third replacement. I had hoped it was a problem with a batch or two. This sounds like it's a problem they haven't yet fixed. I'm surprised this isn't being covered by the tech blog sites. Bend-gate affected less people and that was everywhere. I don't want to simply stir things up but that might at least get Apple to formally recognise the fault.

Apple replaced my watch in the end. Took just over a week for them to get the replacement back to my local Apple Store. I picked it up today. Fingers crossed this one lasts longer.

The Display is not subject to the heat from the charger, that's where the problem comes in, the back gets hot and weakens the glue on the back, but you really did not want an reason why this happens did you, you just wanted to attempt to be funny, well this is not funny to the owners of apple watches this has happened and i'm sure it's not funny to apple all the watches they have to replace, i"m sure there are hundreds more that don't know about this forum.

Superglue won't work, tried that it did not last a week, but I’m sure after apple replaces thousands of watches, I guarantee you on the second version of the Apple watch, the back will not be glued on.
