Q: POP option for mail account with El Capitan

My earthlink account is a POP email account.  After updating to El Capitan - 10.11 - I lost my email.

When I try to add a new earthlink email account I only get an IMAP account.  Under preferences is says "Account type IMAP" - there is no option to change that top a POP account.

How do I get my email back ???????

Ok after contacting Apple yesterday and spending an age on this this fix seems to work. I too will never use imap for mail....

So thanks for this Dudley... always a case of just scrolling down and trying something out eh?

Barney's first reply suggested doing that and I know that works. The only thing he left out was to use "Other" account. Holding the Option key use to work, but not any more. That was the easy way.

The point is when I select OTHER and put in the correct account and sign in information, I do not get a window to select different type of accounts. It automatically goes to IMAP. Some may get that selection depending on the type of account they have.

The only way I can select the type of account options is to use OTHER and put in an incorrect password. Then I can get to those options. It is a different window setup than before, but it works.

The problem I am having at that point is getting the mail app to send my correct password for my pop account.  It just immediately rejects it.  My service is through MSEN & it is a necessity.  Can anyone help

El Capitan Mac Mail setup forces the user to make Yahoo mail imap vice Pop. That's a problem if you don't want your entire Yahoo mail database to download into your small Macbook Air. The way around this is to setup a false email account, which the Accounts Setup page will try and then fail to authentic. When the setup screen gives you more setting options, you can enter the Pop mail settings for Yahoo. I looked for a way to use imap but selectively download, but I don't see a Yahoo setting to make this possible. Even moving messages to another folder (like "old mail") only results in another imap folder in Mail that synchs everything.

The problem with a rejection is it means that you have incorrect information somewhere. It could be your user name or any other wrong information you may have typed in. Recheck you spelling, capitals, or unwanted spaces in each field. If it still rejects it, you might want to check with Microsoft.

Is MSE even POP? Why not just the Exchange setup in the accounts list and let it configure itself the way it wants too.

When you create an account, enter the email address without .com (or whatever) on the end. Use the correct User Name and Password. The absence of the extension on the e-mail address will cause Mail to show the dialogue that allows you to choose between IMAP and POP.

    This works 100%!

Thanks!!!! I had the same problem described here, but Mail kept auto-picking POP for me when I really needed IMAP. Your trick worked perfectly.

It's a bit crazy.  I had the same problem.  Here's how you solve it.

    1: Go to Internet Accounts

    2':Click on *** Other Account

    3: Click the @Mail account

    4: Enter your info

    5: That should do it.

Wow I installed El Cap on a 64 GB jump drive using my Earthlink account. So when mail set it up it set up Earthlink as an IMAP and it works as an IMAP even though I am running Mavs and an old Snow leopard using Earthlink as a POP.

But the difference is that all my spam is now coming through on El Cap whereas as 95% of the spam on the Earthlink Server was never making it to Mac Mail using Mavs and Snow Leopard.  My spam blocker is set on medium and that keeps 95% from getting through but with IMAP I am getting it all.

Earthlink says they are offering IMAP See this     https://support.earthlink.net/articles/email/imap-email.php

Now I have to figure out if I do a clean install over do it from applications will that make a difference??? Judging from the clean install I am using the iMAP and junk mail is off the freaking charts. I gotta get it to work as a POP in order to control spam I know that much.

That's because the Junk folder on Mail is the Spam folder on Earthlink. They are essentially one-in-the-same on IMAP. The spam folder was never sync'd on a POP configuration as it is on IMAP.

    Barney,

Yep thanks for the clarification on why that is happening. Your analysis is spot on. When I tried to explain that to Apple Care they were dumbfounded. I said look I have my server set to dump all mail when it is 30 days old. So I opened when I open the account on El Capitan in IMAP  it down loads 1000 freaking emails of which 800 are junk/spam. I've had this Earthlink email forever because of my business so I cannot delete the account.

Is there a way to coordinate/sync the Junk on Mail with the Spam on Earthlink in IMAP? I couldn't see how to do it.

But I did get POP to work every so well with some fiddling with passwords and settings.

Forcing Mail to give you the POP option is easy but then there where 6 other steps that I had to get spot on to make it work. Even creating an account was tricky. If anybody is having trouble with Earthlink let me know because the are a couple of steps are critical. At one point I got it to send emails but it would not download emails. It was my user name that was preventing me from downloading emails.  The port had to be changed and SSL had to be unchecked. They did not make it easy for sure.

    Rebecca,

If you are still having issues start  the process with putting in an incorrect email address  but the correct password when first forcing the POP option to appear.

It seems that works better than the putting in the correct email address with the wrong password. I hope this makes sense but it helps to have the correct password in place when forcing the POP option to appear.
