Q: Picture Included. Mid 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro green/purple lines on screen. Freezes. Sometimes 3 beeps.

Alright I have a Mid 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro purchased in June 2012. For about the last month, I have this issue where as I am using it random colored lines will show up on the screen (lines usually green, purple, but occasionally the issue occurs while booting and lines are black on white background). As soon as the lines appear, everything freezes. Sometimes the computer automatically reboots. Other times, it will just turn off and start beeping 3 times in a row. AT first, I thought this may be a video card error because it happened a lot when I was watching videos. However, it also happens randomly when I am just using safari/chrome with no other programs runnings. The most annoying part of this issue is that it is completely random. Computer won't act up for maybe 2 days straight during all activities (videos, surfing the web, etc). Then I will have a day where the problem is consistent.

Also, although I think this is just a correlation, all problems started after upgrading to Yosemite.

Does anyone else with a Macbook Pro (especially 2012) have this issue? These two discussions seem to be describing this very situation:

Screen froze, purple lines, three beeps. Help!

Macbook Pro screen glitches, 3 beeps, NOT THE RAM

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

My Macbook Pro 9,2 mid 2012 13 inch MD101LL/A  is under 1 year old and I had problems from day one placing repeated calls to support for help and got absolutely nowhere !! I never got to use this laptop without daily issues. Same issues mentioned in the many comments on this page. I was beginning to think I was a moron as my complaints fell on deaf ears, Finally after AHT test not working, nor able to go in safe mode I had enough and my 1 year warranty was coming close to ending although I purchased the 3 year support. I have to add I am hours away from any Apple support stores and I am dealing with some medical issues making anything I do has to be worth it as I get fatigued easily. Anyway I found Applecare Mail in and asked for this service and was denied! I was fed up with all the wonderful claims I heard about Apple products and support and my repeated request for help denied as they kept telling me it was "software" related which I felt it was not as I had a similar issue with a ASUS K55A I owned and had same problems from day one. I did exactly what I did with Asus and filed a complaint with BBB ! Apple still hesitated, but finally one day I got a call from a support person  Angela and she was my hope although she felt it was software related also but she said Applecare Mail in care would send me a box and check it over and send it back.

I received my laptop back within 5 days: Here are the problems: 3 in all:

    Logic Board 2.5 Ghz

    Hard Drive 2.5 500GB 5400 SATA

ASSY FRONT FLEX HDD BRKT J30

All were defective and replaced, so a "SOFTWARE" issues was not the problem. Just as was the case with my ASUS K55A which the HDD was bad. But having this lovely laptop back, I am again having some of the issues I had prior with crashes and screen lines and just a "BIG MESS" I am sending it back again and asking to replace it with a non Intel Apple product if that exist!  I am sick at spending over thousand s $$ on a laptop you can not enjoy and it has been one big hassle. I am wondering if "INTEL" is causing all he issues as my ASUS had Intel? and I thought I was getting away from WINDOWS!!

Same issue. Reseating the RAM helped for a while, now it's happening again, without the 3 beeps -- just goes straight to restart after the lines appear. Apple store wanted to charge me to replace the logic board. I'm hoping this issues goes the same way as the 2011 graphics card issue and they do the right thing and offer a free repair.

Everyone reading this who has the same issue -- flood Apple with feedback! Maybe we should start a petition?

The picture you posted appears to indicate graphics card failure. I have seen this type of screen defect before. It was a 2008 macbook pro. That specific model had a repair program for faulty graphics chips at one time. When the graphics chip failed in that model, it looked exactly as your screen does.

Possible solution: I just fully replaced the RAM on my laptop after it completely quit on me (it wouldn't load past the startup screen without the lines/bars showing up, restarting, and the 3 beeps happening) and now it seems to be fine. So it's at the very least a good temporary fix, and may be a permanent fix.

It makes sense that the issue would be caused by faulty RAM if you think about it.

Ps. Ordered mine from crucial, installed myself. Much cheaper than Apple.

It's not a graphics card failure. I've run every test and my graphics card was fine, but my RAM would trip up memory test programs like 'Rember' and reseating the RAM helped temporarily too, so it seems that's the issue.

I really hope this stays working, but I suspect from my own experience it will not, Yes messing with the RAM seems to help for some reason. Actually just taking off the bottom panel seems to help, but for me it has always been a temporary solution. When I first got my Mac I upgraded the RAM. One of the first things I did was put the old stuff back in when I started to have issues. The issues definitely went away, but it was very temporary ~1 week and then things began to become progressively worse again and eventually messing with the RAM became less and less effective. The only thing that seems to fix this long term is a logic board replacement. I've even gone as far as trying it with only one dim in to see if that made a difference it didn't. I've reset about every system I could think of with no result. My guess is either a graphics chip issue or a RAM controller issue or possibly even an issue with the physical connector between the ram and the other components. Regardless, personally, and I don't want to be fatalistic, but I've had the issue happen again about a year after having the logic board replaced. I was just told that the logic board is about a ~300 dollar part. I'm not repairing it again now that I don't have a warranty. I'm going to get a new laptop and probably not a Mac.

I'm having the same problem here.. and no apple care to cover it.

Same model and the screen looked exactly the same.

Looking for a resolution. I'll try reseating the ram and reporting back.

Exactly the same problem on my 13" mid-2012 MBP (horizontal lines on screen, OSX freeze and unexpected restart, occasional 3-beeps).

Here are my findings so far:

    1. Replacing HDD and RAM didn't solved the issue.

    2. Updating Mavericks to El Capitan didn't solved the issue (same with clean install).

    3. SMC and PRAM reset didn't help either.

...and each time HW diagnostics test (incl. memtest) reported no issues!?

This is seriously affecting my work and replacing Logic board out of warranty is not an option for me. 13" MacBook pros should definitely be included in the Apple Repair Extension Program too!

Temporary solution seems to be to empty bottom ram slot, as described by neilcol: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6481657?start=45&tstart=0

Same here Macbook pro 13 mid 2012, 2X4GB RAM

I have isolated to problem to the lower RAM position.

When using only the Upper RAM spot and pressing, no error.

I will try a different RAM to see if it memory or logic board issue.

I got exactly the same pattern after replacing the built-in two 2 GB RAM by two 4 GB RAM bought at Amazon. Changing them back solved the problem. And at Amazon I found the info that they have sent out bad RAMs. I have sent them back and got my money back.

I also have the same model (Mid-2012 13" MBP) and the same issue. Mine first happened 8 months after purchase, and they replaced the Logic Board and hard drive. Then 10 months after the first repair, the same problem occurred so they replaced the Logic Board and RAM. That didn't fix it either because 13 months later the same problem is happening. With two new Logic Boards, a new hard drive AND new RAM, obviously there is something clearly wrong with the actual manufacturing of this model rather than the individual parts. I would not bother paying $280 to replace/fix anything for the laptop as the problem will probably persist again eventually.

Hi. I was experiencing this problem after I upgrade my Mac OS X to Yosemite.

I went through all those symptoms and managed to get rid of it by downgrading Yosemite to Mountain Lion (this was my original OS when I bought my MBP).

To downgrade, wipe out all your hard drive - including the Recovery Partition. You cannot downgrade if you still have a Recovery Partition.

I am willing to upgrade to Mavericks next week and see if the problems still occurring.
