Q: iPhone 6s Distorted Sound

Hello All,

I have just received my iPhone 6S (iOS 9.0.1) and i'm really enjoying the new features, however I've noticed that when I have my Ringer Volume turned up full there is a slight crackling/distortion when playing sounds from the bottom external speaker.

The best way I've found to reproduce this issue is by going into settings, turning the ringer volume to full (having the ringer volume anything below full will stop the distortion) and then playing the ringtone "Opening", the speaker will make a minor distorting sound at the high points of the ringtone.

I've spoken to a friend who has a 6S Plus and they have reproduced the same issue, I would like to ask if anyone in the community could try the ringtone above and let me know if they get the same problems with the speaker?

Thanks in advance

Craig

Just talk to them at the Apple Store and let them test your iPhone.  There are so many reasons for sound distortion that yours may not really be a problem that will be fixed by replacing it.  The distortion I was experiencing was actually not that bad after the updates to iOS were installed, but I exchanged it anyway.  Hopefully the distortion will not return, but if it does I will just live with it since it actually was not very noticeable unless you are listening for it.  After reflection, it is hard to say if mine was for sure hardware.  Let them run their diagnostics and see what they think.

Just updated to iOS 9.1 beta 4 and I still have the annoying distortion at the end of the swoosh after a couple of text messages. Everything else sounds fine except for that text message send and receive notification. I've never experienced ringtone or other notification distortions. I guess I'll try a couple more updates before I visit the Genius Bar.

My appointment was advanced to yesterday morning.  Three people behind the genius bar did not hear the distortion that  I heard and they also ran diagnostics.  They said the phone was fine.  I hear it less when the phone is not cranked up to the highest volume level.  They did not exchange my phone but did keep notes regarding my visit.  Do I need to ask for an exchange??

I had the same issues with the message sent SFX sounding distorted and loud along with my lock screen sound.  Oddly enough, I was able to fix all cases by going into Settings > Music and toggling off and back on the Sound Check option (mine was on by default or from the previous backup) at the bottom of the screen.

So glad to find this thread because I have been driving myself crazy with noticing this distortion!

I can tell you it is not due to backups because my iPhone 6S is brand new first hand and I did not load a backup to my device. I have noticed the issue while sending iMessages. The swoosh sound effect while sending is slightly distorted.

I am very surprised I noticed that as being my issue, because after reading the original post and trying the "Opening" ringtone on MAX, I definitely noticed the speaker / audio quality issue is REAL!

The nearest appointment time at my local mall is October 12th unfortunately, so I will be definitely getting my device swapped!

You can help get this issue noticed for more people, by up-voting the discussion thread on Reddit.

    HI,

    news from this "Speaker Gate"...

    1) Restart the iPhone

    2)  uncheck and chek the sound volume equ in music menu. (The laSt one)

    3) charge the iPhone to 100%

and... Try your music, ringtone or video....

    The distortion is gone.

for people who changed their iPhone, i think they picked iPhone fully charged... so no distortion.

Are you saying to turn on "Sound check" option and then charge to 100%?

For some reason, the problem disappears at 100% and around...

There is a simple way to be sure whether it's a hardware or software issue. It will confirm that without a single doubt.

Plug your iPhone to your Mac, then launch QuickTime, screen record your iPhone with the audio from it.

Go to the message app, and send a message. If you hear it distorted on your phone, but good on the screen record, then you have your answer

Its intermittent so it appears. I think it's hardware related due to fixing over 2,000 Apple laptops in my experience. Someone try it and find out. I'm busy at work.

Phone is juiced up to 100% and the problem is gone

i turned off and on "sound check" and it wasn't noticeable in either case, so that has nothing to do with it.

Have about 50% battery with sound check off and the distortion isn't noticed. So, I think we'll since it seems to be related to 100% battery for some ODD reason, what would happen if I put it on Low Power Mode, turned that on and then could notice the distortion. Wth is going on :/
