Q: Windows 10 "Reset This PC" boots using Option, but not using Startup Disk

Hi,

I clean installed my MacBook Pro 15 Retina (Late 2013) with El Capitan. I then attempted a BootCamp install of Windows 10. Everything worked fine. I can boot into Windows and Mac easily, and using the "Startup Disk" option in El Capitan works to boot into Windows.

I then ran "Reset This PC" from Windows (due to activation issues... now resolved). After doing this, I can still boot into Windows using the Option key (choose Windows from the 2 choices), but if I set Startup Disk from Mac OS, I get:

NO BOOTABLE DEVICE - INSERT BOOT DISC AND PRESS ANY KEY

Please help! I really wish I could remotely switch between Windows and Mac OS, but I can't b/c using Startup Disk kills the boot to Windows.

Thanks in advance!

Noah

You are missing the MBR. Can you run msinfo32 and check the BIOS Mode of your Windows installation?

UEFI does not need an MBR, your MSR is also the OS X EFI Partition.

    Hi Loner,

I performed the SMC reset first and tested, I then performed the NVRAM reset and tested. No change.

Please check Applications -> Utilities -> Console logs for any NTFS or bless errors. With OS X running, can you read the Bootcamp volume in finder and see files in various folders?

It complains about NTFS disk being hibernated. I think this is Fast Startup. Can't figure out how to disable it properly yet. Still trying. Could this be the problem?

I already did that. I then tried restarting into Mac OS, and after that I did a full shutdown in Windows and turned back on into Mac OS. It still gives me the same ntfs warning (at each boot, ignoring the old ones of course). Still working on trying to get rid of that warning.

Can you disable Sleep/Hibernate in Windows? Reset the PC will enable it by default. If you do not have proper BC Device drivers, the startup can run into issues.

    Hi Loner,

Finally. Got rid of the error. Had to make sure hiberfil.sys was removed. But it still doesn't boot when I set BOOTCAMP from the "Startup Disk" application.

Did the partition dump indicate anything?

Do you get an error message in OS X when you click on Restart in Startup Disk after selecting Bootcamp? Check the console logs before and after. I expect to see an EFI error.

Since the EFI partition is now being used as MSR, under the Microsoft directory in EFI partition (usually disk0s1), there should be Boot logs that you can check.
