Oct 8, 2015 9:16 AM in response to Ralph9430by tamara m.,I have 48.2 GB capacity left out of my 57.1GB IPad 2. At the time I bought it, I bought the biggest capacity available, just for this reason.
Thanks for your post.

Oct 8, 2015 5:34 PM in response to MichelPMby Sundrop2204,Hi MichelPM,
I'd really like to know how you managed to update all your older ipad models to the latest IOS 9.0.2? I also have an iPad 2, and hubby has iPad 3. I've been deliberating about whether to update these last few days but after reading all these negative comments here from old model users, it's starting to give me "horror chills"!
I'm still on IOS 7.0.2-(yes believe it or not!) which means my iPad is in pristine good condition, compared to some others who have gone well ahead of me!
Can you pls tell me how exactly you did it? Could you provide detailed step-by-step instructions? What also did you do beforehand, before installing the update?
Should I clear up space in my iPad by deleting unused/useless apps?
You must think I'm crazy to want to update since my ipad is working fine, but I too don't want to end up not updating but getting to the point where Apple won't support our models anymore and not be able to use main functions like internet, and simple stuff e.g. map or reading apps just because these apps have all upgraded to IOS 9 and above....
Looking forward to your advice and help as much as possible!

Oct 8, 2015 7:13 PM in response to Sundrop2204by MichelPM,If your iPad is near full (2 GBs of free storage space or less) this is but only one reason why your older iPad isn't coping well with iOS 9.
You need to backup all of your data on your iPad, either to iTunes on a computer, through Apple's own iCloud OR a dedicated Wireless WiFi hard drive, and then start deleting items off of your iPad.
You should start with paring down any music, movies and photos you may have on your iPad.
Then look at apps that you may no longer use and delete these (you can always redownload deleted apps at a later time.
Ideally, your iDevice should maintain a minimum free storage amount of 4- 6 GBs or greater on any iDevice (the more free space, the better) , plus, more than 50%-60% battery status to ensure proper operation, as well as, to ensure the possibility of a successful iOS upgrade/update installation.
In addition it is best to upgrade an iDevice connected up to computer running iTunes with you iDevice sync'd and backed up through iTunes rather than Over The Air (OTA) using a wireless WiFi connection.
I update ALL my iDevices connected up to Mac and sync'd over USB through iTunes.
My Mom"s and Wife's iPad 2s were still both on iOS 7.
I have NEVER, EVER had an issue with any iOS updates.
I did stay away from iOS 8 on the iPad 2s as NOT one iOS 8 update really ever seemed to completely solved MANY iPad 2 users still having a variety of performance issues... especially performance issues with speed/reponsiveness and random crashing.

Oct 9, 2015 8:01 PM in response to MichelPMby Sundrop2204,Hey MichelPM,
Thanks so much for all the instructions and tips to ensure a successful installation to IOS 9.0.2!
Will definitely be deleting a lot of junk and unused apps even though I'm also not the type to download apps I don't use often.
Good to know that some of the tips you suggested, e.g. "upgrade iDevice connected up to computer running iTunes with you iDevice sync'd and backed up through iTunes rather than Over The Air (OTA) using a wireless WiFi connection." is something my hubby and I have always practised.
And definitely very encouraging to know that there are other iPad 2 users out there who had no issue with the IOS 9 upgrades.
Btw, am also thinking, do you think its worth for me to upgrade my iPhone 4S to IOS 9.0.2 too? Or you reckon the model is too old to cope? ;-)
From what you say, there seems to be a strong indication that those users whose older models haven't been able to successfully update to IOS 9+ have something to do with downloading IOS 8+ updates which had its fair share of performance issues. (Sorry Tamara n others, you probably didn't want to hear this!)
Will do as much as possible to "prep" our devices b4 the upgrade, and let you know how we go.
This will probably be my last possible upgrade, wish me luck! Thanks a lot again, you're a real GEM to have on these forums! :-))

Oct 11, 2015 5:16 PM in response to MichelPMby adevero,What an idiotic situation. If I have to have 20% of space and 60% of battery then there is nothing useful or mobile about iPad.
-
Oct 11, 2015 6:19 PM in response to adeveroby MichelPM,It ma seem idiotic to you, but even on a computer doing OS uogrades, you should always maintain adequate enough storage space to make sure that the iOS device, in question, has enough operational and performance overhead.
That means no one should be performing a mobile OS upgrade with as little as 2 GBs or even less free strorage space.
Any conputing device needs adequate computing resources to be ble to operate properly.
Same with battery capacity.
Trying to do a lengthy upgrade/update with a battery capacities/battery life of under 30%or less is, also, asking for problems and issues.
I am surprised at some users trying to do iOS upgrades/updates with less than 20% battery life and/or 2-3 GBs or less of free st space.
Your setting up your device for possible upgrade/update failure when a device isn't working at its, at least, nominal condition performance parameters.

Oct 16, 2015 6:31 PM in response to Flowerlocketby Jwp721,A new software release is the only solution that is going to fix this issue.
Come on Apple it's time for a fix!
-
Oct 17, 2015 9:26 AM in response to Jwp721by Flowerlocket,You are exactly right. If it is Update 8 as they say they need to fix it. Mine is still crashing. I have even started using my windows notebook because I can deal with all the crashing all the time. After this update 9 it really started.

Oct 17, 2015 5:17 PM in response to Tim2251by Shananny,First, I couldn't post to this thread using Safari so using Chrome app! Crash after crash since updating to 9.0.2. I tried suggestions here, turned on Reduce Motion, did hard reset. Didn't help. 13GB available so that's not the problem. Dumped apps I'm not using weeks ago. Besides having crashes, apps load slowly and keyboard delays are a pain. If I have to type a long email, I go to MacBook Pro which defeats convenience of iPad. Any other suggestions? Anyone downgrade to earlier OS?

Oct 17, 2015 5:29 PM in response to tamara m.by stocksy,MY iPad my in is the same. Really slow response to anything, especially on safari. Apps just randomly close, including the apple base apps like mail. You then can't open them again until you close the original open app and then reload.
typing on safari there's a delay from hitting the letter and it appearing on screen
BAttery consumption is very high. Used to be able to last 2-3 days on full charge now barely lasts 1 day
Have ;
1) Reset settings several times
2) Hard reset device several times
3) turned off background app refresh etc
STill device is slow,
i note that there are no responses from Apple to these threads, seems like there are always issues with new updates a la Microsoft !
Come on Apple get it sorted
