Read through this topic: iPhoto not updating in El Capitan.

Although my suggestion might work, Léonie has a good argument not to delete iPhoto and keep it updated.

If you need help getting iPhoto up and working again, there are topics here dealing with that.

If you have it in the Applications folder but can not run it: drag it to the trash. do not empty the trash yet.

Now open Appstore and choose the purchased tab. select iPhoto and click install. After that you have the latest update.

Thanks that did the trick. I can delete the iPhoto in the trash now without causing more problems, Right?

I followed the same advice, migrated a copy of the iPhoto app to an external drive, deleted the iPhoto app in the trash, opened the App Store... and it's still showing me the update as being available (even though we know it's not). Sigh... oh, Apple!

What would happen if, when you go to the Purchases tab from your AppStore, and find iPhoto there, simply hide it (by right clicking)? Would that help?

Sadly that didn't work for me either: I've hidden the purchases for iPhoto and the update still shows.

As I mentioned earlier, I've deleted all mention of iPhoto from my machine and the notice is still there.

It disappeared for a short while upon first deleting the actual app, but reappeared about 5 minutes later.

Oddly, it shows that I successfully updated iPhoto with an update released on 10/15, but still also shows an available update  released on 3/15. They both have the same release number.

Did you disconnect the external after you removed iPhoto from the Applications folder??

This is the craziest part: first I tried copying iPhoto to an external hard drive, attached via USB. It said the process has been completed, but it wouldn't let me eject the drive. I Force Ejected it, and when I plugged it back in, the app wasn't there. Weird.

Then I tried dumping iPhoto to a 4GB USB stick, and... it fried the stick. It said it couldn't complete the operation and the drive disappeared. When I reattached it, OS X couldn't read it, nor could it fix it. I'm kind of blown away by this. Is it some form of DRM?

Finally I placed it on an internal drive that is not my main drive, but only used for archiving files. It copied there successfully, but it's an internal drive so I haven't tried removing it. I supposed I could unmount it, but am loathe to do anything that might make the drive useless.

Kind of an odd headscratcher here.

Well, took the plunge a moment ago and removed the drive that had iPhoto on it and sure enough, the notification in the App Store disappeared... for now.

I will report back if it returns.

Such a small issue, but so annoying.

Thanks all for your help - hopefully you won't hear back from me about this matter.

So when you did a "normal" copy it is only an alias.

Drag while holding the Alt(option) key will really copy.

You can eject the external when done.

maybe even logout then in after you do that.

Then look in Appstore Purchased: it should say "install" rather than "update".

PS: With an internal drive: in DiskUtility "unmount", rest the same as above.
