Q: IOS 9 FaceTime Bug

Hi everyone!

I've been running IOS 9 since it came out today, as well as all the Public Betas.

When i was beta testing it, there was a very annoying FaceTime bug on my iPad 4. Whenever I made a FaceTime Call, I was told that the quality was very choppy, i constantly showed 'poor connection', and my face was covered in pixelated lines.

I was very happy when i installed the final version of IOS 9. I thought that the bug would go away, but it didnt. I FaceTime called by boyfriend, and he says that its very choppy, and the pixelated lines are still present all over the camera. I had to go back to IOS 8.4.1 on my iPad, because that is the main feature i use on my device. I also have an iPhone, and there's no such problem with facetime. I think it's a 4th gen iPad related issue.

Anything i could do? Thanks!

iPad (4th gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 9

    you've been lucky,

I make intense use of FaceTime to connect with family abroad and the performances on iPad mini have dramatically dropped down since IOS9; how many calls have you done for testing? I personally do 4-5 calls per days and all of them are affected since IOS9.

    cheers,

    Paolo

I don't have the time to make that many calls daily, but the calls I make have not had any issues at all. Most issues with FaceTime involve connection issues, network slowdown, and buffering. It can depend on your connection, the other person's connection, issues with your ISP, their ISP, your router, their router, you get the pattern here. There are so many variables. I can start a call well, have a connection issue that wants to disconnect the call, hang up and connect again and then continue on for quite a long time without any issues. With so many other devices connected to our internet anymore, anything can affect it. I have 4 computers at home, my cell phones, a microcell device for the cellular, my Smart TV and then my DirecTV box. All are competing for the same bandwidth.

II've been FaceTimIng my daughter in Canada from iPad to iPad since March without many problems, since updating to ios9 2 weeks ago she is not able to see me, here in uk. Coincidence, I don't think so!

come on Apple get a crucial bug fixed, my grandchildren are missing me!

I'm aware of those variables and on time to time connection issues, problem is that in coincidence with IOS 9 those problems are happening with higher frequency resulting in total annoyance... another proof is that if I use Skype on iPad or FaceTime on my iPhone for the same daily calls I don't have those problems...

I had the suspect that IOS 9 introduced a bug on the mini iPad and I see that many other users share my concerns. I really wish Apple will have a look on this issue, I love FaceTime and I'm frustrated to be obliged to use Skype ;-)

Then provide feedback to Apple. Complaining here does not do anything for your cause. Feedback to Apple goes here, http://www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate subject area.

As far as a bug, it may be on yours and some other, but all I stated was that it was not present on my device, nor anyone else that I know, so I would not consider it widespread, just individualized.

Honestly, just because you don't have this issue, it doesn't mean that It works for everyone else. First of all, I was talking about an IPAD 4. Not any other device. But the IPAD 4. Second of all, the isuue isn't with my intently or my router. Just like other people said it, skype and any other video chatting program works. There are weird pixelated lines all over FaceTime when I use it, which are not connections issues, but something other, because the picture is clear, except those lines.

SO don't tell me that this is not a widesp problem, when thousands of people searched for and viewed this thread.

Along with everyone else, we have similar problems since IOS9.  FaceTime breaks up into bands and pixellates, and voice is choppy.  It was fine before IOS9, and as others say, Skype and other video functions are unaffected so it is not router etc.  It is definitely a bug in the IOS9 software, affecting either some machines or some configurations.  I suspect there may be differences internally between iPad models, either in hardware or firmware, but it looks as if thousands of people are affected.  Like everyone else, I have given up with FaceTime now and gone back to Skype.

Asking for Apple to help here will not work. Apple does not participate in the forum. This is a user to user forum. If you want to get help from Apple, either call Apple Support, or make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store for assistance. Make sure you make a backup of your device before going in case they need to restore or replace the device.

I have the same issue with on my IPAD 4th Gen. It started after I upgraded to IOS 9.

I double checked with different ISPs and tested the senario on IPAD Air and IPAD 3rd Gen it works well on these models. But on iPad4 the issue persists specially if your are using Mobile data.

Can anyone tell me how can i revert back to IOS 8?

I noticed the same issue on 2 different iPads (4th gen) since iOS9. Really annoying.

Did anyone try doing a restore yet?

Same problem with iPad 4th generation. Since I updated to iOS 9 my contacts see my image pixelated when using the iPad. Facetime using a macbook on the same WiFi network works fine. Apple please fix it.

    Hi Syberyan,

Don't bother to restore your device. I already tried this twice but it is going to resolve the issue.

The issue is the video output streaming object in facetime. I have conducted multiple tests with different scenarios involving different devices and networks. each time the issue re-occurred while using iPad 4th Generation.

I have raised a bug with apple and attached Facetime debug log, but have not heard anything yet; hope they would address it. for the time being I am using IMO on my iPAD 4 to stay in touch with my family back home.

    Apple please help!
