Q: My iPhone 6s home button is really hot and the device won't turn on

i have had my phone since Friday, and this morning when I woke up the home button was burning hot and the screen is just black. I went to bed with it working just fine last night, plugged it in to charge, and now it won't work. Nothing else is hot, not even the charging port, just the home button is on fire. I have had the phone unplugged for an hour and the button is still on fire.  I had just made the choice to switch from a Samsung to this iPhone and need to say it makes me slightly regret my choice because I have always known that apple products have tons of issues. I an not happy that I have had this phone for less than 5 days and this is happening. Anyways, is there anything i can do to fix it without having to go into the apple storeI did not finish setting up my iCloud, so to lose all of information because of a defective phone will not make me happy.

I haven't had the issue or the hot button now for a couple days, since upgrading to 9.1B4

This has happened to me about three times where only the "hard reset" wakes the phone up again. I suddenly remembered I had the SEEK Thermal Camera and plugged it into my iPad and took this photo of the phone. As you can see, the home button is measured at 100F....and here's the "normal" picture when the phone is behaving itself ->

    It's a 6S 128GB model from the launch day batch running 9.0.2

I have the home button overheating issues and I also checked my chip and I have a Samsung one. I guess the worse battery life on the Samsung chip is not the only thing that is wrong with it.

With these instructions you can check what chip you have: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/10/08/how-to-check-samsung-tsmc-a9-iphone-6s/

Just to add to this. I have the 6s Plus Rose Gold 64GB, since launch, and I also have the Samsung chip.  I haven't taken the phone in or called Apple since an Apple Store is an hour away and there is no guarantee of getting a replacement.    This has only happened to me twice but once was enough to make me a little apprehensive.

Space Gray iPhone 6s 128GB (with Samsung chip) purchased through Apple Upgrade plan last Saturday. Woke up this morning to the overheated home button, black screen, and no response to power or home button presses. Performed the reboot by holding down the power and home for 10 seconds and the phone is operational again.

I Also have had the same problem with overheating. I left mine plugged in to charge overnight and the next morning the lower portion of the phone was extremely hot.  Once it cooled, I had a black screen. A soft reset at the Verizon store turned it back on.  They said that I was the first that they had heard of overheating.  I asked for a new phone and they said since they could not reproduce the problem that I was out of luck.  Next upgraded to 9.0.2 in hopes that it was a software issue.  Next problem after updating was that the phone would not stop dinging when it was fully charged and plugged in.  Went back to Verizon but the phone would no longer charge to 100%.  They called support and did some kind of diagnostic test that showed a problem with my phone and that it could probably be fixed by going to an Apple Store.  I asked for a new phone sincI was still within the 14 day window of purchase and have not had a problem since.  Apple needs to address these issues.

I was almost ready to buy iPhone 6S 64GB, but looks like it is not a very smart move at the moment.

After all, thumb was the most important evolution in humans, and I am not very keen to get it burnt by a bad piece of technology

    Dear Ralph9430,

Please try and fully understand the situation the OP is in before stating the obvious. Thank you.

    To everyone else,

Please read DWadeC and Hudmonkey's replies to the OP... or use the following:

HOLD HOME/TOUCH ID AND POWER BUTTONS FOR 10 SECONDS TO PERFORM MANUFACTURER'S RESTART.

This operation actually worked for my wife's iPhone 6s today after having the same problem. Not sure if it's a permanent fix, but it will enable you to backup your device before taking it to Apple for investigation or return to store for new iPhone 6s.

    Kind Regards,

    Yoshi

A couple dozen people out of the millions who bought the iPhone 6S reporting a bug with the home button that usually* happens once is not a good reason to avoid purchasing the device.

But this thread is getting longer with people experiencing this problem and more and more postings and video's across the web are surfacing. I subscribe to the theory that where there's smoke (in this case hot Home buttons) that there is fire (i.e. a h/w or a s/w issue with the device).

My own theory that is not worth anything is that it's not the Home button but the circuitry, firmware or connector in the lightning interface sitting directly underneath the Home button.  But it will be up to the guru's at Apple to diagnose who I suspect are working 24x7 to try and reproduce this problem so that it can be fixed!  Let's hope it is s/w or just a few isolated iPhones with bad Lightning connectors.

I have had the same issues. I restored the phone but still had the issue. I brought it in to the Apple store and they thought the restore would fix it. They acted as they have never heard of the issue.

Same issue for my iphone 6s 64gb.  At least T-mobile is willing to offer "buyers remorse" exchange as my purchase was less than 14 days ago.  Yet, I can't find any info on what may cause this issue, and how widely this issue has been reported.  Are we here on this post a minority?  So I am not sure even getting an exchange unit may be a solution or not... Apple should acknowledge this issue and come up with how they plan to address it...

I got a 64GB Silver iPhone 6S on launch day. Had the issue of the hot Touch ID after about 5 days, similar to everyone else. Went to bed with the phone around 80% (not plugged in). Set an alarm and it didn't go off in the morning. Picked up the phone and Touch ID was burning hot, black screen and no buttons working. Did the Power Button/Home combo thing for 10 seconds and it restarted no problems, although battery was now at 43%. Called Apple, set up a Genius Bar app. and took it in 3 days later. Genius said there were no diagnostic issues at all, just said to monitor the situation and keep and eye on it. FYI, I set this up as a brand new phone, so I can't imagine it being related to any dodgy settings being carried over from an older phone.

Just yesterday, on day 13 since purchase, the phone did it again just sitting on my desk (not plugged in). I decided to return it to the Apple Store yesterday for a full refund. I then purchased a NEW 128GB Silver iPhone 6S and will monitor it to see how this next one goes. Not going to risk being stuck with faulty hardware, if it is indeed the case.

Interestingly, the original phone had the SAMSUNG A9 chip, whereas my new one has the TSMC A9 chip. No idea if that will make a difference, or whether there are people here who have experienced the issue with both chips, but just thought I'd mention it. As some of you may have read, it seems the TSMC runs cooler than the SAMSUNG chip. Will keep you posted on any issues I experience with the new phone...
