Q: My iPhone 6s home button is really hot and the device won't turn on

i have had my phone since Friday, and this morning when I woke up the home button was burning hot and the screen is just black. I went to bed with it working just fine last night, plugged it in to charge, and now it won't work. Nothing else is hot, not even the charging port, just the home button is on fire. I have had the phone unplugged for an hour and the button is still on fire.  I had just made the choice to switch from a Samsung to this iPhone and need to say it makes me slightly regret my choice because I have always known that apple products have tons of issues. I an not happy that I have had this phone for less than 5 days and this is happening. Anyways, is there anything i can do to fix it without having to go into the apple storeI did not finish setting up my iCloud, so to lose all of information because of a defective phone will not make me happy.

    Ralph9430,

Good advice for everyone to be reminded of especially for folks that are new to the iPhone and/or non-technical. They just want their phones to work properly.

These devices should not just randomly overheat, period. There's a defect somewhere that Apple needs to fix.

my phone did the same to me friday morning and I was late for work. I kept it with me all day to see what happened. The home button was red hot all day until eventually after work I pressed the side switch and it displayed the empty battery and charger cable on screen. It cooled down so I plugged it in and minutes later it was back on as normal. So what ever happened it drained my battery and left me without a phone. Rather annoyed will be asking for a replacement if it keeps happening.

Same problem with my 6S. It had abut 30% battery and suddenly turned off. Totally unresponsive and black screen, but the home button was burning like fire! I pushed the home button and the power button simultaneously for about 12 seconds and the phone comeback to life. I have it for less than 10 days. I am an Apple fan and I'm costumed for its quality products, this one is disappointing however, hope they can fix this issue for good promptly. This is the second time since my first iPhone back in 2008, that I have faced a problem. Hope this is helpful...

My iPhone 6s had 40% battery life left, had not been using it for about 1 hour (and it was not plugged in), and all of a sudden I have a black screen, phone won't turn on, and home button is extremely hot as if it's on fire.  Nothing I did could get the phone to turn on, and no response to "hey, Siri" either.I DO have the TMC processor chip so this does not seem to be a Samsung chip issue. I have been running on OS 9.0.2 for two weeks so that should not be related to the issue, either.

AppleCare helped me do a hard reset and it is fine now.

Same issue happened with me this morning. I have had the iPhone 6s 64GB Rose Gold for about two weeks now. Plugged my phone to the charger at night and this morning there was a black screen and the home button was burning. Initially I thought there was an issue with the charger or the phone cover but realized the entire phone was cool except the home button. After researching this forum, I realize others have had the same issue and rebooted my phone by pressing the home and power button simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds. Phone restarted and the home button immediately cooled down. Very disappointed with Apple - for the price us customers are paying for this phone, this issue should not be happening. Hoping this doesn't happen again, otherwise I am taking it back to the Apple Store.

I wanted to add my name to the list here.

Woke up this morning to a turned off screen and very hot to touch home button. Had to reboot the device using Home + Power to get it to turn back on; device still had 62% battery life left.

Unlocked GSM iPhone 6s 64gb Space Gray (MKR32LL/A). iOS 9.0.2.

OMG. This has happened to 3 of the 4 iPhones on my family plan. I just googled it to find out if anything similar was happening to others. The phones seem to shut off randomly, while charging or not. The Touch ID gets super hot and the only way to fix is a hard reset. 2 6s and a 6s+. Hope it is just a software fix.

This just happened to me and I've had my iPhone 6s Plus 64 Gb since launch day. I woke up and wondered why my alarm didn't go off. I then discovered that my screen was blank and my Touch ID button was really hot. I held the power and home button to get it back on. I had to do a google search and came to find this thread.  I have the Samsung chip btw.  Apple is gonna have a lot of issues with warranty replacements if this is related to the specific chip in the phone. Now I don't trust my alarm to wake me up in the mornings

So 1 week in finally relented and upgraded from my trusty iPhone 5 ( which developed a swelling battery issue and after waiting nearly five hours  in store with another 100 people, only to be told they don't have one in stock, 'Jesus wept') I purchased 128gb iPhone 6s.

1 Week in with 6s on iOS 9.01 all good , constantly beping pestered to update, I finally did to 9.02 now tonight picks up the phone presses the home button and a really hot burning sensation , black screen and  won't turn on.

Ten or so minutes later I try every button confit to get it to start up, plug in the charger, not even a charging screen.

Finally and not even sure this resolved it, I pressed and held the home and power button and it came back on. Battery at 70%, missed calls and messages to boot.

Unfortunately, my iPhone 5 still waiting to be replaced, and I feel I have to take this iPhone 6s back.

really losing the faith right now

So, for anyone STILL having this problem have you tried upgrading to 9.1b4?

I had this issue several times, on the release 9.01 and on 91.B2, B3 but since upgrading to 91.B4, nothing.  Even the situations the seemed to produce it previously, regularly, don't produce either the system freeze or the hot home button.

What are the conditions you mentioned that triggered the hot home button and shutdown issues? That seems to be the most important mystery which no one has been able to address. If you could reliably trigger the problem issues, then Apple could find the fix. Please elaborate for all.

My phone was sitting unused for 1 hour before I found it with a black screen and then a hot home button. It was not being charged. So I can't say in my situation that anything I can identify would have caused it. In any case, Apple had me do the hard reset and it worked fine afterward. Apple did diagnostics at store today and it was fine.

I do know in my case it is NOT related to a specific chip in the phone, as I have the TSMC chip and not the Samsung chip. I don't think this issue has anything to do with which chip you have, and I also think it has nothing to do with whether you have upgraded your OS or not.

Unfortunately that's one issue that is holding up a fix, there doesn't seem to be a way to reproduce it. I have had it happen in the middle of the night, after I pushed snooze, and a few times while it's in my pocket. The iPhone software diagnostic tool Apple uses doesn't find the issue.

Historically I could reliably reproduce the issue by putting the phone into airplane mode and leaving it face down.  By morning, it would be locked up. sometime around 00:30 it would crash
