See this support document for help. If your iOS 9 device is stuck on Slide to Upgrade - Apple Support

You shouldn't lose content on the phone if you created a backup of the device before you attempted the update as you should have. If you do not have a backup, then it is very possible that you could lose some data.

    Hi there,

When i connect it to the computer it requires me to enable PC access (slide my phone open and give permission). But thats not available to me now because of the whole 'slide to upgrade'...

Did you follow the exact instructions on the page, that said that after connecting to the computer to hold the sleep/wake and home buttons until you see the Connect to iTunes screen? That should put you in recovery mode which would bypass the need for the passcode.

Ok I shall try that when I finish work. Do you happen to know if restoring is 'factory settings" therefore lose my pics etc. or if it will just restore back to old software update (ios7) and not lose all my content?

Recovery mode to restore will remove everything from the device. As I stated earlier, if you have a backup, you will be able to recover your content. If you did not backup then you are at risk. I'm not sure why you would not create a backup to secure your content before doing an iOS update.

I did an iCloud backup. As you can tell I'm not very tech savvy. When I go onto my iCloud.com account tho, I dont see my pics, only contacts. You seem to be fed up with helping me now, so no need to bother with me anymore, I'm going to contact Apple Support some time. Thank you for your assistance tonight. You were very helpful. Tc.

I'm not fed up with anything dear, trust me. You will not be able to see the content of your iCloud backup in iCloud on the computer. The backup file is not something you can explore. Once you follow the steps to restore the device, it will then take you to the prompt to restore from backup or setup as new. Choose to restore from backup. I'll help you as long and you need and as long as I can.

Hi again Chris, i have just finished following the steps suggested in the link you provided but the problem persists. After itunes updated the software as per step 3, my phone woke up/looked to be resetting then opened lock scrèen and "slide to upgrade" ... do you think this is fixable?

Ps. Went back to original issue with itunes requesting permission to access phone via slide to unlock.

So if you slide to unlock what happens? Have you tried to get past that? It should continue after sliding.

When I slide to unlock it displays the 'updating bar', usually takes about 10 minutes, then when it is complete it goes back to the home screen with slide to unlock.
There is no getting past it.. its a continue loop/cycle of upgrading then home screen.

You may want to try putting the device into DFU mode. You will need to Google for instructions that that. See if that will do it. If not, then you may need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider for assistance.
