Oct 11, 2015 2:09 PM in response to lescornwellby Dgriffit,Hi. Do you know if doing that would stop my system from constantly flagging up that I have "1 update" that can never be updated...

Oct 11, 2015 2:21 PM in response to léonieby briegull,Leonie, my friend that I was trying to help get iphoto updated, with the problems described here, finally just said she wanted to have SOMETHING that worked. We called Apple support and the rep told us how to turn off Photos from trying to store pix in the cloud, and it now all works fine in Photos. Gave up on iPhoto. He said it just isn't gonna be around to use any more in the US.

New Macs come with Photos instead of iPhoto, that is right. And Apple wants all of us to move on to Photos.
But it is very disconcerting that Apple does no longer allow to reinstall purchased software from the App Store. We should be able to rely on the Mac AppStore, if we need to reinstall applications. After all, Apple does not provide installers for applications purchased from the App Store. We are supposed to be able to reinstall by downloading from the AppStore, if need be.
And this problem with reinstalling and updating iPhoto shows, shows, that we cannot rely on the Mac AppStore. We have to try to save any installer, before it gets automatically deleted, and back the installers up, just in case we need to reinstal some dayl. And we should download any update the moment it is available, because later it may be to late.

Oct 15, 2015 11:06 AM in response to Dgriffitby jhcovert,I'm having this exact problem - while not a deal breaker, it is annoying to have that red notification in the App Store telling me I have to update only to be told the it's not available. Per others suggestions, I've hidden iPhoto in the Purchases section, but that doesn't seem to allow the Update notification to be removed. Part of me thinks that these little niggling annoyances of El Capitan will work themselves out in the next few months (ahem, ahem, duplicated iCloud calendars).
If anyone knows how to remove the notification I would deeply appreciate any tips.

Oct 15, 2015 11:11 AM in response to jhcovertby léonie,If you remove each and every installed version of iPhoto from your Applications folder and connected backup drives, so spotlight will no longer find iPhoto as installed, and then restart your Mac, the App Store should stop prompting you to update iPhoto.
but updating iPhoto would be preferable, if you can.

Oct 15, 2015 11:14 AM in response to léonieby jhcovert,Thank you, Leonie.
Immediately after I posted this, I found this link: Re: iPhoto shows update in iStore after installing ElCaptain but when I try to update it says not available . How do I clear this since I now have Photo?
I dragged iPhoto into the trash, re-opened the App Store and the notification was gone. I've migrated entirely to El Capitan and am using Photos instead, so I wasn't even given the choice to use iPhoto any longer (it has a large white circle with a slash through it over the app). I've archived the app in a folder on my desktop for now, rather than delete, but the problem seems to have solved itself.

Oct 16, 2015 8:50 AM in response to Treemarkby Kwestkings,Photos is one of the original core programs and selling points for Macintosh in the 80's
IT WORKED!You would think that they would know how to do it by now...
HEY APPLE! IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!!
Photos Version 1.1 (335.4.0) doesn't recognize my IPad, I can’t import pictures to my iMac from my IPad
ITunes syncs but does not import from IPad. It tells me to go to Photos (see above) or to Aperture (which is not on El Capitan) or to Image Capture which also does NOT recognize my IPad either.
I WILL NOT USE ICLOUD!
Thank you for listening...

Photos did not exist in the 80s, you're surely talking about iPhoto, that was a part of iLife (besides iDVD, iTunes, iMovie...).
Photos is entirely new, and still has its teething troubles. I myself tend to keep my RAW files away from Photos, but I never imported any RAWs into the previous iPhoto either.
Any way: you should realize that you are not talking to Apple here, but to a bunch of Apple users, who are willing to help, if you are able to convey your question. You must realize we cannot see you, or take control of your Mac, so you will have to try if the suggestions offered here work or not.
iPhoto 9.6.1 should be found in the App Store, under the Purchases tab, at least if you were an official user of the previous version. How to get hold of it, is sufficiently explained above and in other such topics.

Mar 9, 2016 10:39 AM in response to Treemarkby scarpie,So far I can't stand Photos, after my upgrade to El Capitan I went with Photos assuming all would be good (or better) then completely erased my iPhoto app and now I'm regretting it. I work a lot with photography in all sorts of categories and the Events in iPhoto was just right, with Albums as another option. I agree with a comment below how things are good enough, you get used to a program/app then these techno geeks have to constantly upgrade and sometimes the changes are unnecessary with horrible outcomes.

May 17, 2016 1:22 PM in response to scarpieby MrSceptical,I bought an Imac in 2008 and kept up to date with all the updates. Also in 2010 I bought 2 Mac Book pros for my daughters after being extremely happy with Macs, until now and El Captain slowed everything down and I lost iPhoto, my old IBM T45 laptop is quicker. I have down loaded all my files on a removable hard drive and will be buying a new PC. I am ****** off with Apple. Luckily I have never use cloud for storage. So goodby Apple who take yer cash and runs.. not any more yer don't, not with me anyway.

Jul 29, 2016 12:59 PM in response to Dah•veedby klk9876,"some folks" don't like it? No kidding; Photos has no features. "Less sophisticated" is a severe understatement. I'm no sophisticated user. Would have been nice to know iPhoto would be gone.
I was not told, when at the apple store they updated me to El Capitan, that I would lose iPhoto altogether, and also that I'd lose the ability to find word documents by searching using Spotlight or Finder, etc. Wish I'd stayed with 10.6! I was fine with that.
