Q: upgrading Mail not completing

I'm trying to upgrade to MAC OS X, el Capitan. While upgrading the mail program, it has been hung. Got about halfway and then the program seems to stall out. I found this support article, HT205331: If Mail on your Mac keeps trying to upgrade your email library

I followed the instructions and then got this error message:

Some user permissions have been reset

Error: -69841: Permissions reset on user home directory failed

Underlying error: 1: POSIX reports: Operation not permitted

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (copy and paste):

    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

Thanks for your prompt help Linc! As it turned out, it looks like it "healed itself" and I don't need to do any additional problem solving. Since the OS el Capitan is new to me, I don't know if it installed properly or not. Ignorance is bliss.

Thanks again for your prompt help. You are a Mac genius!

Hello Linc, i have been having the same problem. After upgrading to El Capitan, when i opened the Mail app it started upgrading the database. I am stuck with the progress bar halfway with the message "Upgrading your database...it may take a few minutes" for hours now.
I did run the terminal command in your previous post but the problem still persists.

Is there any way i can solve this, since i do not have access to my work email anymore.

    Thank you in advance,

    Radu
