Q: Problem With Mail Changing My Smart Mailbox Rule

I have a Smart Mailbox that I previously set up to show messages in the inbox from one of my privately hosted email accounts and my iCloud account (to which I basically re-route all my mail from my various Gmail addresses).

I had no issue until I upgraded to El Capitan, and now this Smart Mailbox is refusing to accept my iCloud account's inbox as a rule. It works with every other account except for the iCloud one, which when I select it as a rule and save it, Mail somehow changes the rule to one of my other accounts.

Any ideas on why this might be happening and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks.

Mail, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

I'm seeing this behavior too. The smart mailbox rule won't accept one of my gmail inboxes as input to the rule. As it turns out this email address (a gmail account) is the same gmail address associated with my iCloud account. And in this smart mailbox I can add any of my other gmail inboxes as input just fine, as well as my iCloud inbox, but not the gmail inbox with the same address as my iCloud account. When I select it in the rule and click OK, it switches it back to the iCloud inbox.

I submitted a ticket to Apple tech support over the phone on the 30th of September. They are ostensibly aware of the problem and hopefully working on a fix.

I am seeing the same behavior with my Gmail account in Mail. I only have one Gmail account, so cannot compare to secondary accounts.

Have you had any luck figuring this out?

Nope, not yet. I originally posted in three different forums. Still no suggestions, and still no fix. :-/

I submitted a bug report to Apple. Anyone else who hasn't yet should do the same. Hope this gets resolved!

In this thread on the same issue, user "darnelud" figured out a workaround that also works for me:

"If I untick "Enable this account" for my iCloud account in Mail preferences then all of my smart mailboxes work as expected."

In fact, when I disabled iCloud, all of my smart mailboxes corrected - either instantly or once I selected them. In other words, I didn't have to re-edit their settings to correctly select the Gmail mailbox... they just kind of reset automatically.

Not a perfect solution, but a good workaround, especially if you don't use iCloud email.

I'm glad you were able to find a workaround. Unfortunately for me, iCloud is one of the mailboxes that I'm trying to use in the smart mailbox rules, so I'm still out of luck.
