Q: My start up screen is blinking a world then changes to the apple icon then starts up. What has changed to make this happen?

The start up process is white back ground with blinking world then eventually the apple icon appears and the system begins. What does this indicate and what do I need to do to correct?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Mac is trying to boot from an external boot volume on the net..

1. System Preferences > Startup Disk
Select Macintosh HD

2. Restart
