Q: Mac mail inline attachments - Yosemite 10.10

Has anyone found a Yosemite work-around yet to send image attachments as file icons that show as icons to Windows users and not images?

Right clicking and "show as icon" works on the Mac but Windows users still get full images in the email body.  I send lots of files for my work and this is really really annoying!! Many of my customers are not particularly PC literate and just cannot get the image out of the email.

Have always used Lokiware's Attachment Tamer, but in good old Mac "we don't care what our customers want to do, we will force them to do it our way" fashion, this has been disabled and Lokiware seem to be struggling to come up with an updated version.

Does this annoy anyone else, or is just me?

Nick Gates.

Try using a browser email client.

I use a big beautiful Mac for my personal computer at home but have a Win/PC device for work. So sending images from home to work has always been a problem. I too have tried all these workarounds and have found that sending attachments through your web-based email client (Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, etc.) is a decent workaround. I keep Gmail's email client up in a Chrome window all day long on the Mac. When I need to send mail to my work machine with an image attachment I just compose the message in the browser client instead. Attachments go through just as you'd expect - as attachments and not inline images. I'm not sure if this will work with an apple-based email address and their iCloud client.

To reverse the change take the same Terminal command and change the YES to a NO.

I am fighting with the same problem as we send Photos between members of a Photo Club and run into the problem all the time.

There was another fix using a Preference Pane called Secrets but it does not seem to work either.

The one using an Empty folder at the end of your message does work but then you have to explain it to the users at the other end.

The Terminal command  "defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool YES" writes its data to the com.apple.mail.plist file in your user library if you want to see what it is doing, open this file with a text editor.

I am looking around for a way to create an Apple script to execute the command on and off.  That way I can send it to others in my photo group.  I think there used to be a program called Platypus that could take script commands and turn them into small Apps.  I am off to look for that.

Hi guys, slightly late to the party on this one, Only stumbled across it as I have had to swap to Mail after upgrading to El Capital while Microsoft sorts out Outlook, someone may have already got there on this but you can disable this in Terminal

    To disable:

    • Quit Mail.
    • Open Terminal and enter the following command: defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
    • Open the Mail again

    To re-enable:

Open Terminal and enter: defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool no

    Hope this helps, Malcs!

WARNING: One thing to note on this, if you have any Images in your signatures it will disable those too!

    Thx Mad Dog,

That appears to work, but it strips all my icons I have in my email signature. Now they are all icons. Yuk

This is ABSURD that Apple has let this awful feature go on for years.

Please let us know of any other suggestions and what we can do.

Yes have been sending _itch emails to feedback for as long as Apple Mail has been around.

You are right, that now that Outlook 2016 is out and very bad, it has sent many of us back to Apple Mail which is not much better.

    Thx Much

    Hi Fred

You're welcome. Yes unfortunately as I mentioned that will be the case, I've not managed to find a workaround as yet for images in signatures so I've reverted to a 'nicely formatted' HTML one for now.

It seems to be all or nothing. Real shame as this is the only thing I don't currently like about mail.

I've tried everything mentioned above. With a single jpg as attachement, it arrives as attachement on a pc. When multiple jpg's inserted, a mail with only small thumbnails arrives...

I found out that the headers are different:

    Mail with one picture:          Content-Type: image/jpeg; x-unix-mode="0644";

    Mail with two pictures:         Content-Type: multipart/related; type="text/html";

    Someone has a solution ?

    thx,

    Mooriez.

I'm in the business world and hate Windows and love Mac OS. 98% of my clients are using Outlook on Windows.  I am so burned out on receiving replies such as "I cannot open the attachment" or "the attachment is in the body and opens too small to view". And on and on. I had some success with Attachment Tamer but it has not been updated to work with new versions of Mail.  I've searched and tried everything.  I now use Clive Galani's Anti Inlne Plugin but still  get complaints.  I know I can use Outlook 2011 for Mac (which I have) but it is not going to work with El Capitan.

It's time for Apple to put their big boy pants on and build an adult Mail app.  (I'm also annoyed by "On October 13, so and so wrote". What's the point of that? Alll emails are date stamped. So I have to use an addon, QuoteFix for that.) if I need addons for this, and plugins for that, I might as well run a **** Windows machine.

Maybe Apple doesn't give a hoot about business users but I would bet that most home users and students are using Gmail anyway.

The solution is to not use Apple’s Mail program.  They aren’t listening and don’t care.

I used SeaMonkey for years (combo of Thunderbird and Firefox), which does everything you want it to.  It has a seprate window for ingoing and outgoing attachments, which makes them easy to see and open.  It doesn’t do dumb things like displaying one kind of attachment and leaving another closed.  It doesn’t need extensions to manage attachment icons.  I have never had a client say they couldn’t find or open an attachment sent in Thunderbird.  On the other hand, I have missed a number of attchments burried at the bottom of a long back and forth email, because they are invisible.

Unfortuntely, I decided to go "All Apple” when I bought a new computer several years ago.  Mail has been a big step backward.  All the icon/inline mess is just a drop in the bucket of problems with Mail.  It doesn’t delete trash files when you ask it to.  I sometimes have to delete a list 2 or 3 times to get it to disappear. It hangs the computer for long times when I go to shut down (better in El Cap).  It will continue to display Drafts long after they have been sent, making you wonder if they have been sent or not.

It is time for me to change back to Thunderbird for email.  Apple has ignored their customers wishes long enough.  I dread trying to move all the emails from Mail to Thunderbird and I would appreciate any help with that task.

Also, the Mail icon in my dock is sitting there with a (1) in a circle, indicating there is one new email, when there are none - it has never been accurate.

I now use Outlook 15 for Mac, only for the photo's. I can easily drag and drop. And Windowsusers get the attachments as they ment to be.

Only pityfull that I can't export directly to Outlook from within Lightroom. Only 'Mail' appears there...

But if you move to El Capitan Outlook will no longer work.  I paid $1,800 for a 27" iMac, which is a wonderful machine, and I would have gladly paid another $20 to $40 for a better Mail app to go with it, rather than a weak email app for free.

Sorry if you know this, but It seems that any pdf that is one page will show up inline and anything 2 pages or over will show up as an attachment.

When I want something to show up as an icon, I attach it normally, and if it's inline, I select it and then control click it, which gives me an additional/contextual menu and I can select "view as icon".

Yes. But as far as selecting and clicking for the contextual menu "View as Icon" that is for emails we have received. My issue is when I send emails to users of Windows and Outlook on Windows. (Of course, I cannot see what they are receiving) They complain that they "cannot open the attachment" (almost always a pdf I attached) or they say the pdf is inline in the body, or they say it's a "small icon in the body" and when they open it, "it is too small to read". I just acquired Clive Galeni's Anti InLine plugin so I'm waiting to see how much complaining I get from Windows / Outlook users.

I have spent quite a while testing various methods of attaching an image to Apple Mail.

The only one that I have found that works every time is the empty folder as the last item before your signature.  This seems to work if you have one image or many in your email.  I have not tested with PDF but suspect it will work too.  It seems to force the Mac Mail to zip the attachments and they show up on Windows correctly.

Airmail 2.5 works the way Apple Mail should with attachments and PostBox seems to work as well if you drag the images into the attachment window.  I have tested them with Windows Live Mail, and other clients on the Windows machine and they seem to work as expected.

The terminal command worked for me but it would not reverse if I wanted to turn it off.  I had to manually edit the line to restore the inline function.  Because of this strange fault in the terminal command I am sticking with PostBox for now.  Airmail was nice but rules did not work properly.

So I understand >> you are saying to create a New Folder, place (drag) it in to the body of an email, and then place my images / PDFs in that folder?
