Q: System keeps waking from sleep every 2 hours, again

Since the OSX 10.11 El Capitan update, my system keeps waking itself (and me) from sleep approx. every 2 hours.

It goes back to sleep on its own but keeps waking up again. Really annoying.

Messages in Console:

13/10/15 01:55:49,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: RTC (Alarm)

13/10/15 01:55:49,000 kernel[0]: RTC: Maintenance 2015/10/12 23:55:49, sleep 2015/10/12 23:02:33

This problem also appeared in 10.10 a few months back. And it was solved. But now it is back again in El Capitan.

Does anyone have this problem too? How can I solve this? Or, Apple, please fix this!

    Hello y3II,

It sounds like your computer is waking from sleep unexpectedly for some reason. Without knowledge of any troubleshooting you have done for this, I would have to suggest taking a look at the troubleshooting and settings outlined here:

If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected

    If your Mac wakes unexpectedly

Your Mac might wake for these activities:

    • Network activity that uses the Wake on Demand feature. Examples of network activity include iTunes sharing, photo sharing, printer sharing, file sharing, and using Back to My Mac.
    • Enhanced notifications from FaceTime, Messages, and other apps and services.
    • Bluetooth activity. To prevent Bluetooth devices from waking your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Click the Advanced Button, then deselect "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer."

If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

    • Reset the SMC.
    • Reset NVRAM.
    • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
    • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
    • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account

    Dear Sterling r,

Thank you very much for your time and the link!

So basically I have to turn off everything? And turn it on every day if I want to use these awesome features? That can't be right?

I will try the steps for this night. I turned off "Wake for network access"; "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer"; "File Sharing"; turned off iCloud/Facetime/Message; did the SMC and NVRAM reset; disconnected all usb-cables. Now wait and see . (Maybe it is better to just shut down the computer every day )

No more wake-ups (RTC (Alarm) during the night anymore! Something solved the problem.

PS I also turned on Do Not Disturb from 01:00 - 08:00 (I did not turn off iCloud/Facetime/Messages). Maybe did that help. But during the day the computer sleeps well too.

    Hi,

Had the same problem, It's Bonjour that wakes up the system.

I used this command in terminal and I can confirm it resolved the problem:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist NoMulticastAdvertisements -bool YES

Not sure if totally disables Bonjour, but I don't use it anyway.

    Hope it helps!
