Q: Compatibility of Final Cut 7 and X

I am currently using Final Cut 7 and we have Final cut X at work. Is it possible to transfer projects or video files between the two versions or do I need to update my home version of Final cut?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

The two are completely different applications. Moving from from legacy versions fo FCP to FCPX is not trivial, but it can be done. As a work flow it;s cumbersome to try to go back and forth between the two and things can get lost in translation.

I would strongly suggest using one or the other.

Realistically, FCP X is where the future lies re: NLE.

"We" may the problem here. Decide on your production software and get everyone who is involved to understand and accept the reasons you are choosing one editor over the other. The decision will be based on who needs to use the software, how well they can do that, and what other applications you will be sending to and receiving media from (Motion, After Effects, Logic, Photoshop, &c). You will find OS issues, network conflicts, crew competency, and personality quirks within the work group can influence your decision.
