Q: I cant remember the password to the Itunes back-up of my iphone on my PC can I reset it ?

I backed up my iPhone to my PC come time ago. I  have just upgraded my iPhone and wanted to reinstate it from the back-up on my hard-drive. ITunes has asked me for a password so that it can re-instate the back -up unfortunately I cant remember what the password is possible to reset it or obtain it from elsewhere

    Hey Gyepih,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I understand correctly, you would like to know if it's possible to restore your new iPhone from an encrypted backup of another device without knowing the password. No, there isn't a way to restore a device using an encrypted backup unless you have the password.

If you haven't already, try taking a look at the article below which provides tips that may help you recover the password.

About encrypted backups in iTunes - Apple Support

What if I can’t remember the password for my encrypted backup?

You can't use an encrypted backup if you don't have the password.

When you try to use a backup, you might see a message saying "The password you entered to unlock your backup was incorrect." This message means that the iTunes encryption option was turned on in the past by:

    • Yourself
    • Someone who set up your device or transferred your data to a new device
    • An installed profile (for business or education devices). If you're using an installed profile, contact your system administrator.

If you don't have your password:

    • If someone else set up your device, check with them for the password.
    • Try using an iCloud backup instead. If you don't have an iCloud backup, you can make one.
    • If it's still relevant, try using an older iTunes backup.

    So long.
