Oct 5, 2015 9:15 AM in response to Linc Davisby dwight.d.s,I tried this action and haven't noticed any substantial change in CPU usage. It still seems to work it's way up to 100-200% CPU after only a minute or two.

Oct 6, 2015 7:59 AM in response to mcastillo5125by Ric Perrott,I am seeing the same exact issue. Safari 9.0(10601.1.56.2) on Yosemite 10.10.5
Safari routinely climbs to over 200% CPU and stays there until I quit.

Oct 6, 2015 12:28 PM in response to dwight.d.sby dwight.d.s,Update - Since taking the steps provided by Linc Davis, and in my case a reboot, I have been able to run Safari without any significant CPU consumption. Not sure if I just didn't wait long enough for the purge of website data to complete, but it is much better now.
Thanks,
Dwight

Oct 10, 2015 4:39 AM in response to mcastillo5125by pktspkts,I had a similar problem after updating Safari. I have isolated this to the bookmarks. Try doing this:
1. Shutdown Safari
2. From cli: mv ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist ~/Desktop/
3. Startup Safari
After removing the bookmarks file I do not get the high cpu on Safari. So either something is wrong with my bookmarks file or something else around it. I use xmarks for bookmark syncing and that is not functioning too well either.

Oct 13, 2015 3:07 AM in response to mcastillo5125by Anastasis Andronidis,I followed Linc Davis suggestion, I also restarted my Mac as dwight.d.s suggested but my Safari still going berserk with 130+% CPU :/
What is going on with quality in Apple lately... I am very disappointed...

Oct 13, 2015 11:28 AM in response to Anastasis Andronidisby Ric Perrott,I have tried both removing bookmarks, as well as removing web site data. Neither has helped at all. If I am running Safari, within 10 mins it will start to wind the CPU up over 200% and it will stay there until I quit Safari completely.
I have now switched over to using Google Chrome as my default browser and I have seen no issues whatsoever.

Oct 14, 2015 2:39 PM in response to Linc Davisby Dr. Space Cowboy,I was having the same problem... Safari CPU usage at 120-130% after a couple of minutes, consistently.
I rebooted and updated Flash, and it was better, but still after 10 mins Safari was back at 120-130% CPU.
I then tried your tip, and Safari actually hung when I tried to quit after removing website data... tried it again, and same thing. I then rebooted, and removed website data once more and this time Safari didn't hang when quitting.
I rebooted once more for good measure, and Safari CPU usage now seems back to normal.
Thanks for the workaround Linc, kind of a bizarre bug... something Apple should have caught.
EDIT: I spoke too soon... just took a little longer this time (maybe 15 minutes), but Safari CPU usage again went up to ~130%. I may be imagining it, but it seems to depend on what web sites you visit...

Oct 14, 2015 2:55 PM in response to Anastasis Andronidisby Dr. Space Cowboy,I just reported it using Apple's feedback mechanism... don't have time right now to submit a formal bug report.

Oct 15, 2015 9:55 AM in response to Ric Perrottby robbsterino,I didn't want to swtich to Google Chrome, but that is the only alternative based on what I'm reading in this thread. Safari always takes 233% CPU utilization on a 6-month old MBP, with no Safari extensions enabled. Apple has had weeks to fix this but I see no updates offered.

Oct 16, 2015 10:41 AM in response to mcastillo5125by jocker,I was seeing the exact same behavior and was able to reproduce the CPU spikes every time I opened a new tab showing the default Favorites/Frequently Visited sites. No idea what the actual fix is, but I was able to work around it by going to Safari > Preferences... > General and setting "New windows open with" and "New tabs open with" both to "Homepage", and then I set my homepage to https://www.google.com. So far so good. I haven't had any further CPU spikes.

Oct 16, 2015 11:40 AM in response to jockerby robbsterino,Thank you for putting this suggestion up. I tried it just like you suggested, but soon the CPU utilization spiked up in the 250% range again, even after quitting / restarting the app. So I'm thinking this is not a solution. Has yours continued to not spike?

Oct 16, 2015 2:49 PM in response to robbsterinoby jocker,Shoot, that's too bad it didn't work for you. I've been using Safari for a few hours now and its CPU usage is currently sitting at 1.6%.
