For the problem you describe, there would be no difference between Empty Trash and Secure Empty Trash.
If you deleted them in Photos or iPhoto, did you empty the Trash in those Apps?

Oct 14, 2015 3:59 PM in response to Barney-15Eby Jchadwickt,I can't seem to locate the trash for Iphoto with this new version. I've emptied everything I know to... I don't upload my photos into iphoto. I delete them from my desk top. I'm a photographer so everything is through lightroom and photoshop

Oct 14, 2015 4:24 PM in response to Barney-15Eby Jchadwickt, when you put things in the trash it's not really deleted kinda just an override so it takes up space on your computer.. i work with really large files as a photographer so the space adds up really fast. the last time this happened i deleted the trash within iphoto and i had about 9,000 old photos that i thought were deleted but were not. I stopped using iphoto to import my photos after that. but now my computer says i have over 900GB's of photos but i know thats not true but I can't seem to find where my computer is hiding them...

It doesn't take up space because the inodes are dereferenced. The OS only sees free space. By your reasoning, your entire disk is always full even if you haven't put anything on it.
Ok, so the reason you think you have 900Gb of photos is because the About this Mac window shows that you do? Is that correct?
If so, re-index Spotlight and check again. Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support
That display is created by Spotlight. If the index is incomplete or corrupt, you'll get bogus results.
