Q: When I turn on my iMac the loading screen comes on with the apple logo but then the screen turns black with an image similar to the skip sign in uno

my desktop froze last night so I had to force shut it down and I haven't turned it on until tonight and the screen is black with a sign similar to the uno skip sign.

iMac, iOS 9.0.1

Click here and see the 'Prohibitory sign' section; if the computer was running 10.6.8 or earlier, use a Mac OS X install DVD.

I've followed the instructions on there. if I don't have a backup of the system I want to restore, should I reinstall? Or do desk utility? If I do either one will all my documents be erased?

Back up as much of your data as you can, try running the Disk Utility, and if that doesn't work, reinstall the OS. If a problem occurs, your documents may get erased.
