    Hi Eric Root,

    This really helped me.

I did the reindexing twice to no avail then tried Go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts, unchecked this account option then rechecked it and the missing sub-folders magically appeared while I watched. Thanks allanhuk

For me the problem is also there. However, for me it occurs because I need to sync folders between two Macs (iMac and Macbook).

I'm using ChronoSync and before upgrading to El Capitan this worked perfectly. ChronoSync did nothing else than copying new/modified files in the ~Library/Mail folder from one machine to the other.

With El Captitan, copying takes extremely long, it seems that many more messenges get a new timestamp in contrast to before. Furthermore, after syncing, the synced machine shows zero emails. I can resolve this problem by letting it manually rebuild the mail structure (but this takes 30min, so it's not very practicable).

I only have limited space on my Imap server, so I need to copy my older mails to the local folders. And here the syncing process by copying does not work anymore.

Not syncing the Envelope files works for showing all emails, but they are in wrong folders, not marked unread, etc.

    Hmm, any ideas?

    Thanks. Achim

    YEESSSSS!

This worked..and fixed/removed the triangle drop downs too!!!!

    ---------------------------------

    Try this:

    1) Quit Mail

    2) Go to users/Library/Mail/V3/MailData

    3) Move all the files that named Envelope Index to the trash

    4) Restart Mail

When I click on View there is no option to view Library. When I go the folder for Mail, there is no V2, V3, etc. None of these options are working for me. Since Apple knows this is happening, why don't they tell us how to fix. Why should I have to try this and that and that and this -- all to no avail!!! Come on Apple! How do we fix this? Tell us!!!

    Hi Wordling,

Library is hidden.  Please scroll up to conversation to see the picture attachments on how to show it.  you might be looking in the wrong folder?

I have just downloaded el captain... not only have my emails ceased to work but I have also lost all the items in my mailbox

    I don't understand all this re-indexing stuff

In ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData, delete any file that begins with “Envelope Index,” such as Envelope Index or Envelope Index-shm.

    What does this mean????

Can someone tell me how to do this in English please I'm not impressed with this update!!!

Before trying any of the complicated stuff above, try this:

If you hover to the right of your main mailbox - say 'Google' - there is a plus sign and then 'Show' also appears.  Click on 'Show'.

Worked immediately for me, but it did take a bit of time to find it.

Hi to everybody who is trying to help! This upgrade seems to affect different computers differently depending on setup and wifi etc. None of the proposed fixes listed here worked for me and I'm sure I'm not alone. In fact, if I had followed some of them, I would now be in a world of hurt. I finally took my computer to my local friendly hacker who took two and a half hours to fix it. It was quite a complex process. All I can say is Good Luck to All.

And some of you people telling the rest of us how SUUUUUUPER easy it is to fix -- Maybe for YOU! Please.

My anger at Apple remains unabated. This is a crappy way to treat your customers.

I sincerely apologize for offending you if I did.  I guess the relative definition of easy depends on the years of IT experience a participant might have.  So with my 25+ years IT experience, I knew what I was doing.

I hope you are successful in fixing the issue.  My index files were in the V3 folder as described above, and once I removed those three files, mail took hours to reindex, but everything came back in full.

    Good Luck, friend.

    Hi Wordling,

I am sorry to hear this.  This update has done my head in too, it just that the process that worked for me and for some was the process advised by Eric Root which was re indexing.  I am also not an IT person and it is very disappointing to find all your emails gone because of this update.  Mine is working now but I still find something doesn't seem quite right.   Anyhow it wasn't also super easy for me.  Just lucky I guess. I hope Apple says something about this ****-up.

Thank you. You didn't offend, though. My skin is thicker than that. I was just so frustrated!! As we all are with this. So, my apologies as well.

I'm up and running now also, but the amount of effort required is too much to ask of the non-geek.

    Apple? Your turn.

Not only did I end up with missing emails from the update, I was also having issues with my work exchange folders not syncing properly and my personal IMAP account was receiving and then removing emails before I could look at them: it was a mess.  I did more than just remove the envelope files.  I also ended up removing the exchange and IMAP stored folders (basically everything that wasn't a plist/signature).  Yes, I know this is another technical solution, but it seems to have cleared everything up nicely.  The interesting part is that when I looked back at the ~Library/Mail/V3/MailData folder , it appears to have moved the exchange and IMAP storage folders out of the MailData folder and to the parent V3 folder.  This solution will only work for those mailboxes that are stored on a server and synced to your computer.
