Yes you can without problem. But always be sure to have a Time Machine Backup for your photos in general, besides this lib.

Thanks!  Do they keep it there in the event people might prefer to use iPhotos?  Gosh, I feel bad for people who have loads of photos and just doubled the space it takes up on their computers!

Actually it is not uncommon to need or want the iPhoto library

and it does not in any way double the space requirements, in fact  it takes very little additonal space - see Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support - you can do what you please but it is recommended that you do not delete the iPhoto library - and if you do be sure to have an archive of it in case you need it - TimeMachine is a backup system not an archive system and anything backed up on TM will sooner or later be deleted - it is not a safe solution for archiving your iphoto library

Canozzie11 if you don't plan to use iPhoto again just delete it, nothing will happen. Always do a backup, and check in Photos app » Preferences » General » Copy items the Photos library. You photos are too valuable to loose it. You will never loose your photos sooner or later.

    Cheers ))

So just to clarify, the old iPhoto library and new Photos App are taking up the SAME space, correct?  And on the topic of archiving, I do a Time machine backup but also have all my photos in the cloud.  Is that safe enough or should I archive the individual photos somewhere else you think?
