Errors often include using an @ in the server name, or a typo in the password. btinternet should have the setting available on their help page (minus your password). It also seems that, at least on laptops and desktops, turning off WIFI solves some problems (if you have a iPhone, you might notice you have no problems on that device).

Oct 16, 2015 1:22 PM in response to Guitterbluidby Guitterbluid,Thanks to JohnMM & Lincoln Davis. You kept my hopes up when I was going around in increasingly desperate circles. After checking the btinternet help online I changed port number, added ssl & I also temporarily changed authentication to none, removed user name & password. When I readjusted authentication back to password & added user name & password- as if by magic I was able to start sending mail again
