MY MacBook Pro 2014 retina display, second time the display went caput in less than a year. Initially the screen started with a few flickering horizontal lines, then gradually multiplied then eventually blacked out and never turned on again. Luckily still under 1 year warranty. I take care of it so well and yet problem after problem. I'm an apple product user for a long time. Every MacBook and iMac I purchased, they all gave me at least one or two problems. Apple products known to be faulty. of course they are not the best machines. That comes with different branded components on board. Apple does not produce its components like other companies do. All components inside of macbook Pro and other machines are made by Samsung, toshiba, sharp, LG, etc. that's what happens when you put different branded components together to build a computer. at this juncture I'm determined that I'm done with apple. After wasting $3100 for this junk and prior to this had another MacBook Pro 2010, which also had hard drive crash and trackpad malfunction. My 2012 iMac also had a hard drive crash within the first year. Luckily they all went caput within the warranty period. Now it's my iPhone plus is acting up. The screen goes gray for a few seconds before it opens the home screen when waking up from sleeping mode. Just waiting for surface pro 4 to transition back to windows again. Goodbye apple. Over the years I made apple rich, and got nothing good in return from apple.

Thank you! I did not change the sleep modes to never because i was concerned About it shortening my computer life. It worked without me doing that. Spotify was also opening in the short periods that it was on So there may be something Related to that.

I got my screen to "reset" in two different occasions by NOT turning the computer off.  I pressed CONTROL-SHFT-OPTION-POWER at the same time for approx 10 seconds.  It turned OFF.  I waited approx 10 seconds and held the POWER button down until I heard the "start-up" sound, release it and my screen came back up!

I've got a problem with this too. I have performed the SMC reset and the NVRAM/PRAM and no difference. When I turn it on, I can hear the start up sound but the screen doesn't change. If I close the mac and wake it up again, there is a chance that the screen will turn on but it will remain a dark grey and completely blank. This is a macbook Pro Late 2013, OSX 10.11.2. Should I get a genius bar appointment or is there an easy fix? I can not access anything from the boot including hardware test, safe mode etc..

Hi blue-eyes Dragon. Is the screen lighting up at all or is it completely black? If no light check with a flash light or hold to light when on to see if you can see anything on the screen> This would mean the the back light for the LCD is bad. If this is not the case and you have a dark grey screen, you can turn on by holding down Command R which should bring you to the recovery screen. There you can go to Disk utilities and run a permissions repair or check you hard drive and or repair it. If it shows the drive is not repairable You would have to erase the drive and then go back to recovery and reinstall you OS. If you have access to an external monitor with mini dvi you could check to see if that shows the startup screen. If non of this works, you can go to the genius bar and they will make an evaluation as to what is wrong.

The screen does turn on only sometimes. So far it will not turn the screen on if I turn the computer on, but if I close the lid and reopen it, there is a chance that the screen will turn on. But it is completely blank. With a torch, I can not see anything on the screen. If I command + R at start up the screen is still black. The external monitor doesn't show anything at all either.

Hi blue-eyes Dragon. You could have multiple problems.  .   If when using an external monitor you get a grey screen. That would mean that you have a problem with your LCD. When you started up using Command R. Were you holding down the Command R keys and then pushing the start button. Then continue to hold down Command R until you see a grey spinning asterisks or the recovery menu. There is also a chance that your built in keyboard is unresponsive. Which would not effect the start button, but would effect any keyboard commands. If you have access to an external keyboard , you could try it. Also at the top of your keyboard are a row of keys. I think F1 and F2 control screen brightens. Try tapping on the F2 key and see if the screen comes back. Also on the front of the Macbook there is a light that comes on as you startup and then goes off after startup. When you close the lid , does the light come on and then go off when you open the lid?  If it stays on or pulses you ether have a problem with the switch for sleep mode or the ram. Usually if it's ram you will get a series of beeps, but not always. Hope some of this helps.

Life saver - couldn't work out how to get beyond the apple light and black screen then - with a lot of fingers on the Command (⌘), Option, P, and R keys the start up sound chimed out four times and I was back in the game!

After spending an hour trying to reboot and 30 minutes on the phone with technical support I now see it's not black just very dark. The first part worked and allowed me to sign in but not the second, anything specific you did?
