It's under the display not on the back.

Oct 16, 2015 8:42 AM in response to phpballerby rkaufmann87,Only if it's a 27" model, 21.5" iMacs made from 2012 are not intended to have the RAM upgraded. While it's possible on the 2012 21.5" models, it is still MAJOR surgery and should only be done by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
If you have a 27" model, then you just need to look harder, it's there!

Oct 16, 2015 8:42 AM in response to phpballerby Phil0124,The access panel is only available in the larger 27" inch model. If you have a 21.5" inch model there is no access panel.
To upgrade or replace RAM you would need to open the iMac completely.

Oct 16, 2015 8:48 AM in response to Phil0124by phpballer,Thanks Phil. Apple's Memory upgrade page doesn't say that. How do I take it apart, do I have to remove the screen?

It's SUPER major surgery. Visit http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_21inch_late_2012_mem/ for a video showing how it's done. It really should be taken to an AASP to have the work done!!

If you mean this page:
iMac: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support
It clearly states the following:
*Note: Memory is not user-removable on iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), and iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2014) computers. Memory replacement for these computers must be done by an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

The link I posted in my previous response is a guide to how to do this. Yes you need to remove the screen, and yes as rkaufmann87 points out , its a major endeavor. NOTE that if something goes wrong while you are doing this, and the iMac suffers any damage, Apple will not help you. Opening the iMac will forfeit any and all support from Apple.
If you really must upgrade RAM, take the iMac, and your RAM to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service provider and have them do it.
