Are you receiving them and able to open them in Preview ?
It seems that possibly this started with AIM (They have been subject to IMs with Malicious code in .jpegs before) and it seems they are no allowing pic in line to be sent.
I seems that for Messages on the mac this has been changed for all Services the app can join.

In that case ask the send er to either zip them (compress) before sending or send them in a folder which the app will zip anyway.
